• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Yet another oil change question.

May sound like a crazy or stupid question but......if a copper squash washer has previously been installed , does it still need to be changed for each oil change ?

Some roll them over once and reuse. My preference is to replace it. Penny's?

They are supposed to be changed every time. Many reuse them, though, often several times. If you decide to reuse them, inspect them carefully before reinstalling. If they are scratched, gouged, bent, or badly indebted, replace them. Also be sure to use a torque wrench when reinstalling. A used crush washer has less "give", and needs to be properly tightened to assure that it will remain leak free. In the old days we would actually anneal them to soften them before reuse. Eventually they will work harden enough that they may drip. It is a good idea to change them every few times around. Of course it is even better to just change them at every oil change...like Jer said, it just costs pennies. Same routine applies to O-rings, BTW.

Every time..!!

I do, most filters come with the oring and two crush washers at least where I get them. Crush washers are meant to fill in any inconsistancy between the drain plug and the engine case or tank. As you can imagine copper doesn't pop back so the compression marks/groves will tend to let the oil by. Not worth the risk imho but in a pinch they can be reused...!!

copper

I agree with your answers and had planned to buy new. reason I asked is because a salesman ( young ) told me that since they're copper they don't harden like the steel ones. I figured for the low cost it wasn't worth risking. Couple of bucks is a lot cheaper than the alternatives.

Thanks for the confirmation guys .

washers

Well mine didn't come with o ring or crush washers .Guess it just depends on where you buy them ? Naturally I didn't think to ask about or check for the o ring but when I got home and popped the filter box there was no ring inside so it's a trip back now.So much for assumptions , but I did at least have the crush washers for all the good it did me....LOL

I have not changed "O" rings or washers every oil change in over 40 years of riding. Never had a problem. Order the filters from BajaRon and you get 5-Star service and if you ask for new washers and rings for the filters you order, you will never have to worry again.
