Y pipe gasket replacement

http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12853&highlight=18392-MAM-000

i thought this thread stated the left one was larger than right ones.
but may be i read it wrong.
so same honda gaskets fit both right and left?
If you're talking about this quote
The one on the right is the GL1800 one, the one on the left is BRP and is damaged.
I was saying that the Honda gasket is a little longer than the BRP gasket. The ID and OD is the same on both and the Honda gasket works fine on both sides.

i went back and read the thread again and i did missed something.
the larger gasket krb1945 was looking for was for the other end where pipe is connected to muffler.:opps:
i guess i jumped thru that short post asking about the OTHER end.

I changed mine this week (9,400 miles). The left side didn't look too bad, but when I took apart the right side, I found almost nothing was left! :yikes: Seriously, all that was there was a piece about the size of a postage stamp and it looked just like a piece of window screen! I installed the Honda gaskets and I'm confident they will perform much better.

This was my right side.

Changed mine last week with Honda gaskets 11 thousand miles
BRP gaskets left side totaled right side XXX totaled. :yikes:

I took my spyder in for it's 6000 mile check up and update today. The tech said I needed new gaskets on the Y pipe so I asked the service manage if this was covered by warranty. I was told BRP considers it a wear item and would not cover its replacement. He also said BRP was aware of their frequent replacement but no joy on coverage:yikes: So I was clipped for 2 hours labor plus parts.
Anyboy else run into this situation??

I had mine replaced under warranty with 25,000 miles.

is this installation of y gaskets doable by average people?
i do my own oil change and spark plug replacement but NOT exactly a "mechanic".

If you can change spark plugs on your Spyder you can do Y gaskets.
Especially if you have a stock muffler. Take off the spring on each pipe, loosen the clamp on each pipe,
Loosen the one bolt holding the muffler to the frame,
The Y pipes will pivot down. :2thumbs:

well i will find out soon enough.
spyder should be coming out of shop next week, two bros pipe and race air is on the way and i went to honda dealership across the street from my home to order couple of gaskets today and should be here next week also.
after all that's done, spyder is going to dynojet to be used as guinea pig for power commander!!!

plan is coming together:D
except for F1 windshield's phone being disconnected...
i have not receive my slider yet...

When this gasket goes, is the noise very noticable? I have been hunting down a ticking noise coming from the engine area, using a hose in my ear to try to pinpoint it. Seems like it is coming from the front and is more noticable when hot. I also am having a rough idle, so I think it may be sucking air. (plugs are new, runs great at high RPMS, and getting great gas miliage.)

Ticking noise and a rough idle are more likely a spark leak, from a bad plug wire or damaged spark plug boot. Look at it run in the dark, and move the plug wires around a little. Sometimes real hard to locate, I'm afraid. If you have had the Tupperware off that far, you should have noticed signs of an exhaust leak on the pipes near the joints, if the Y-gaskets were badly blown. You should also have noticed the exhaust noise, heat, and (increased) popping in the exhaust.

With the tupperware off, start the engine and hold your hand next to the exhaust pipe joints. If the gasket is leaking you will feel the exhaust escaping out of the joint. The pipes get hot really fast so you want to be speedy in doing this.

BTW you can hear when the gasket goes on a stock machine. It makes it sound kind of knarley. I have since put a green air filter on mine and the extra noise from that overrides the exhaust gasket noise.

Scotty, I had ran it at night with the tupperware off and checked for spark grounding. I found none. I even had the air box off with the filter laying over the throttle body so I could see the front cyl. At the same time, I had a hose to my ear trying to locate that ticking. I put it around the plug wires, at the exaust ports, and all over. It relly seems to be coming from in front of the engine, way up front where the steering column goes down to the power sterring unit. I can hear it also with all the tupperware on while idling at a light when the engine is hot. It is wierd, it does not seem to have the same tempo as the engine RPMs, but more erratic. Anyway, I dont mean to get too off topic. Pretty sure it is not anything with the Y gaskets, I visually inspected and listened to those today. No leaks there, small leak at the Hindle, so I removed it, slotted it, and reinstalled it with copper hi temp rtv. I will let it cure overnight and check that tomorrow. Also, it is going to my dealer tomorrrow for the update to the update.

Well I checked that, thanks. Seems ok, not loud, no signs of leaks, and I got my hands around there best I coud and did not feel any air escaping. I think I will order a set of those Honda gaskets to have on hand anyway, and then keep my eyes and ears open for a problem in the future.

Does the ticking change when you increase throttle?

Do you have any extra electronics installed or HID's ?

The ticking does not seem to match up with the engine speed. I don't have any HID's installed, just some LED lighting.

Just a crazy thought. I had i ticking noise in my Truck.
It drove me nuts. Turned out it was the remote on my ignition key hitting the steering column. Could be some thing as simple as that.

:roflblack: There is one song that I play on CD or my MP3 player, in my truck or Nancy's HHR, that has a tambourine playing in spots...just the left channel. Every time it comes on I thing a wheel bearing is starting to fail. You'd think I'd learn after a few years! :roflblack:

Trickie Dick

Thanks guys for your feedback. I will go back to dealer on this. I had forgotten about the Honda replacement gasket until after it was done and I was talking to the tech about it. He admitted they were the BRP ones were a POS. Also they did get my pre authorization to do this so it was not a suprise on the bill. However 2 hours at $82 and hours plus $29 for the gaskets was:yikes:

$82 per hr. Concider yourself lucky. Dealer here charges $110 per hour. Wants $220 to put on my riser.:gaah:

Got 'er covered

Good news, I heard from the service manager at the dealer today and after checking with BRP, they will cover the gasket replacement under warranty. Said since it wasn't at the 12k service, it was covered. :2thumbs:
So I'm happy with my dealer again.
Dick
