Y pipe gasket replacement

I took my spyder in for it's 6000 mile check up and update today. The tech said I needed new gaskets on the Y pipe so I asked the service manage if this was covered by warranty. I was told BRP considers it a wear item and would not cover its replacement. He also said BRP was aware of their frequent replacement but no joy on coverage:yikes: So I was clipped for 2 hours labor plus parts.
Anyboy else run into this situation??

I think I would have protested a bit. BRP lists them as wear items, but the service interval is 12,000 miles. A part which fails to meet the expected wear requirements is defective. I doubt that your dealer actually contacted BRP, they probably just shot from the hip. I don't know what the rules are in your state, but in Michigan they must get your approval for additional work, so I would not have authorized it. If they had already performed it, without permission, they would have been stuck with the cost.

Replaced my first at 3500, no problem since then, but will go with the Honda equivalent next time, cheaper and last longer.

Ken has found a Honda replacement part for this gasket that will probably never need to be replaced.

When this gasket is bad it does have an effect on how the engine runs. Something about sucking air up the exhaust valve. So it is best to replace it with a good part and not have to worry about it.

Gasket B, Muffler 18392-MAM-000. It is about half the price of the BRP one.

2 hours to replace those gaskets?

I could see that for an end-user, but a tech should be faster than that--- especially if they have the bike torn down for the 6,000 mile service already.

Thanks guys for your feedback. I will go back to dealer on this. I had forgotten about the Honda replacement gasket until after it was done and I was talking to the tech about it. He admitted they were the BRP ones were a POS. Also they did get my pre authorization to do this so it was not a suprise on the bill. However 2 hours at $82 and hours plus $29 for the gaskets was:yikes:

How d0 I find the Honda gasket? Maybe a part #.

Thanks

Cost = $6.50 plus 10% California tax

I copied this off of the package of a spare one I have.

The gasket that goes out is the one on the right hand side of the bike where it collects into the muffler. I don't think the left hand one is an issue. My right hand one would last about 3-4000 miles with the BRP part. And it would literally fall apart. I had maybe 20,000 miles on my Honda one until the dealer reverted back to brp when he did some other work. I will replace it with the spare Honda one that I have.

It would take a klutz like me about 45 minutes to change the one on the right side. I have never had a reason to go after the other one.

Again, thanks so much for the input. I emailed Carlo with this issue as well as called the service manager back and asked him to get in touch with BRP. We'll see.
I'll probably have to replace it again when I get back from my Route 66 trip with Irish2theMax and Spydergene. I will definitely go with the Honda gasket at that time.
As usual this forum is right.:bowdown: The tech confirmed that the right side was the problem side, no issues with the left.

Actually, it was Ken (krb1945) that found them. And, they are much better than the BRP OEM gaskets.

is this installation of y gaskets doable by average people?
i do my own oil change and spark plug replacement but NOT exactly a "mechanic".

Sorry Ken.

I can change my right hand one with little effort. I would think anyone could do it.

I'll be doing both this weekend.... I figure might as well do both at the same time with the new Honda part.

I changed mine with the honda ones, a pain to fit the exchaust back on but I was able to do it in under an hour and that includes taking off the entire hindle first and then taking the Y pipes completly off the bike. Found it much easier this way as there is a little wiggle to slide them off and on.
