• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I have a 2008 RS and have made it my own. I love it. Have had a few occasions to ride and try out the RT and as nice as it is, I just prefer my RS. Of course you have to consider this is not like comparing apples to apples even though they are both spyders. A Camero and a Cadillac are both great cars but completely different. I have added enough mods to my spyder to make it comfortable for the long haul all they while keeping my sport version. If I could do over again, it would still be the RS.
 
It's great to have options.

62 years young. Love my 08 GS M5. The GS works for me because I like the option to go 2 up with the wife. We have toured all over the Northwest and BC togeher. I have added a lot of mods to make it comfortable but that is part of the fun. I also like riding solo when I tour with my 3 sons who all ride sport bikes - grat fun. It's great to have options.
 
I think it really comes down to riding style. I prefer the RS because I like an aggressive ride from time to time and can easily set it up for touring too.

I think you may see a correlation between age and selection of the RT also--- no offense intended -- I just don't see too many sub 40 year olds on RT's......

I am another Gen-X member, and love my GS Spyder. I sat on an RT once in the dealership, and it didn't really seem to fit me and my ryding style. I was a crotch rocket pilot in the past, but didn't ride for almost 17 years because of my multiple knee surgeries. I was extremely happy to find the Spyder and to be able to experience an open air ride once again.

While Porsche may say "there is no substitue", I say with my Spyder I say "there is no comparison". :thumbup:
 
Wow, what a lot of great input. Thanks for the thread Bob. At 68 and somewhat disabled, my 09 RS SE5 was the answer. My only problem was I was very uncomfortable in the sports position. My back and shoulders wouldn't take it. My desire to ride was overcome by putting a 5" Helibar extension on the handlebars, a taller windshield and designing my Seal FloorBoards. Those three things were huge in making riding a possibility.

I am looking seriously at the RT for next summer. This thread has been very helpful. I understand that it will take fewer mods than my RS and that's great because a new seat, saddle bags and sound system are high in my wish list. I know that if I can swing an RT my first mods will be my floorboards. Too many have told me how much the improved their RT long distance ride (sorry for the commercial, but i really mean it). Anyway, I hope to see a bunch of you at SpyderFest. It will be my first Rally and my first also as a vendor. The vendor part should be pretty easy as I have exhibited my sculptures all around the US for 41 years. Old tricks, new dog.

I love the GS SM5. I have made it back up to 160~165 @ 5'9". It gives what I need, from the comfort to get me to the destination, to the transition into rodeo barrel racing/catamaran sailing/solo side car sport riding. I love to out smart the nanni and have sportbikes looking over their shoulder and waving me past in technical twisties. I am animatronic!

The RS fit's my personality more than the RT but comfort wise you can't beat the RT. It just does everything better than the RS no matter what you add to the RS.

As far as riding hard, the RT will run just fine with the RS in the twisties. It's a matter of getting use to it. The extra weight may slow it down on takeoff's but once you get it moving it handles great (with the right shocks).

If I could only have one it would have to be the RT. The main reason I would pic the RT over the RS is it's the only one my wife will ride on the back with me on. That's says it all right there. Cool factor still goes to the RS.

My SO didn't like the RS, even with the BRP backrest (she's 5'11"), but she loves the RT. That's not usually a decision killer for me, but it's a nice bonus.

I just enjoy the overall comfort of the RT, which I just couldn't get with the RS.
 
This may be a totally dumb question, but is there actually that much of a difference between the two? I understand the bags and screen are different, but is there some seating position difference I'm unaware of? :dontknow:

The seating is very different between the two models, both for rider and passenger.
 
I had to get off of 2 wheels due to an accident and we got a slightly used 08 GS SM5, put risers and a corbin seat with backrest on it. It rides awesome, but when you get over 100 miles, it is hard on the bum. Most of the time, we are riding 2 up.

We test drove a RT with Audio last month and both me and the wife fell in love with it. As a passanger, she said it is night and day. My goal is a save enough coin to get a RT, and keep the GS as a backup...:ohyea:.

Oh yeah, my wife and I are 33 and love the RT...My 2 wheeler was a HD geezer glide classic, but I loved that touring bike.
 
Knowing what I know now - probly still the RS, as we had so much fun building it to what we want. RT is a great ryde. RS was much fun to build. Now, if the Beemer wasn't in the garage . . . . . . :D
