Wiring the USB connector, a question.

A couple of weeks ago, I got this USB connector that goes into the blank spot on the switch cluster. I want to install it when I have the skin off for the oil change that's due in a couple weeks. I know a few people on here have installed this. My question is, what are the best wires to tap into once I get in there? I'd prefer it to be switched if possible.

Pam, you don't need to tap any wires, run them through the bodywork to the battery or the remote terminals. It won't be switched unfortunately, but it's the easiest install.

In frunk find rubber plug to the right of the battery cover. Pull plug, inside are a couple of switched hot wires. Test to see which is which. Hook up, run wires to outlet.

Heated grips or fog lights

''I did the exact same thing. At first I tied it to the fuze box but the problem is the power was always hot and if yours is like mine, there is a light that always stays on. So I tapped into the wire for the heated handgrips. That way, power goes off when the bike is off.

GPS

I ran mine to the gps power connector under the right side cover under the seat. It is fused and turns on and off with key. You buy a 2 pin connector off ebay and run harness along frame. i also put in a extra connector by the gas tank for easier servicing.

Pull the center plug off and see if it a round hole first..I found this out when I removed my center plug..I didn't want to cut the hole to the size of the square switch and left it alone..

That is what they are for. Part of the OEM harness.

Thanks Joe. One of my winter projects is a 12 v plug in the frunk and that existing wiring will make the job easy hopefully.

Pam--buy a $10-$15 voltmeter from any hardware store. Place one lead on a chassis ground & probe the connectors to find out which wire is 12 volts. You'll be using the volt/ohm meter on many projects.

If you look under the right side cover under the seating area there are 2 plugs 1 audio input round jack and 1 2 wire connector with a dummy plug in it. You buy a 2 pin weatherpack connector off ebay. about $2-3 each.

I have a voltmeter. But the question is how to determine which wires go to what when your in the middle of the run. I don't want to have to strip wires just to find out which one is hot. I guess I'll just have to figure it out somehow. Thanks

Wiring the USB Port

In the picture under the USB port, Check the Green socket that is provided for the grip heater. If you are not using grip heaters you will find power and ground available at this socket. Check and confirm with a multimeter. Tin the leads from the USB port and plug them into the socket for a test. You can wire in the proper wire end terminals once the connection is tested. :2thumbs:

Don't strip! Use a safety pin. Or a needle. The pinhole is easily sealed.

I agree don't strip. The connector is right there anyway. Just stick the voltmeter probe into the connector. If that is difficult just get a male spade connector and put that in the connector.

I added the same socket with a direct wire to my Battery Tender attachment. I added the button in the middle of the cluster which turns power on/off to the usb. That way I can charge something without the bike being on or have the usb off when the bike is running.... And adding stuff is fun.
