Winter Storage

Okay, I filled up the tank and bought some Sta-Bil. Got caught in the rain Saturday going to gas station. First time out in the rain on the Spyder since I bought it last February. Have new 2010 RS SE5. Felt a little bad getting it wet but if a bike can't take the rain, it is not a bike.

As for the Sta-Bil, I have the little bottle supposed to treat up to 20 gallons. Do I put in the entire can and then run the engine for awhile?:yes:

Also, I don't know if you can call it "winter" here per se. I live in Austin TX.

I wouldn't put anything in there. You should have several good riding days during the winter in Austin. Just plans to ride when you can. Rain and dirt can be washed off. :cheers:

I agree with HDX. It is best to add Stabil before you fill, to get good mixing. The instructions are on the bottle, which is specially constructed to meter out the correct amount.

Wouldn't hurt to put the old girl on a battery tender, if you are not going to ryde her for awhile .:thumbup:

You can put the Stabil into a machine after filling the tank, but I would run the engine long enough to get to full operating temp. That will allow the fuel injection return to mix the stabilizer, and then distribute it through the entire fuel system. It is better to get the Stabil mixed well, and distribute it on the ride home, but doing it now is better than letting the Spyder sit for a couple of months without it. I would suggest a battery tender, too.

Same as above. Add stabil per directions. If :spyder2: will not be used for a while--the battery tender is agood idea.

Been on a tender so got that covered. Last few days it has been rainy and in the low 40s. When I rode on 12/24, rain was near freezing. WInd chill was probably near 32.

I guess I can't cuss you out....... That is chilly, especially for TX.

Rest of the week it is supposed to be in 60s and 70s and sunny. Will ride around then and put in Sta-Bil, just to be careful.

My Winterizing Ideas

I just received my Gerbings heated insoles, gloves, jacket liner and extreme pants. Did not like the idea of placing the Spyder in hibernation, so decided to just winterize myself. It was a warm 59 degree day today, but tried the jacket liner anyway to see if it was working. First indications are they will work great when cold. Next week there are supposed to be a couple of days with the high temps in the 30's so will give the whole outfit a try.

My wife says I look like a little kid dressed up to go out and play. Little does she know how right she is!!!!

If you do live in a nice area with temps that fluctuate up to nicer riding weather roughly every 2 to 3 weeks (as we have had in VA so far)....should you go ahead and add the fuel stablizer now or just wait until later?

Bring in all the electronics you can as well...like gps, comm systems anything that is portable. Temperature fluctuations can cause issues with the device.

It doesn't hurt to add the fuel stabilizer. Just remember to add the appropriate additional amount when you fill with gas again. Be aware that part of a good winter storage procedure, especially with ethanol-containing fuels, is to top off the tank, to avoid the head space that leads to condensation when the temperature changes.
