• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Well it finally happened my windshield pivot bracket broke doing 70 MPH. :yikes:


I was able to pull over and lower the windshield by hand and let it sit in place till I could get it home. Got it up to 60 MPH and never popped back up.

Not sure why these things have not been recalled that is dangerous especially if the pivot/hinges break too.

Now have to locate a NOBOOT mount.

I thought I seen one of the vendors on the forum had them listed in stock. Didnt see any on lamonster or Spyderpops.

Any ideas where I can get one local maybe can get a few more rides in this year if I can locate one.

Yeah all I heard was crack and the windshield flipped over into the drivers compartment. Going 70 mph can be a pucker upper that's for sure.

Just wondering if any of the newer Spyders are having broken Windshield arms. Lets say 2017 on up?
 
I had two arms crack, the one on my 2010 and on my 2014.
When I got my 2020, of course I was most curious to see if there was a design change.
I didn't notice anything different in the design, except there is a marked reduction in the movement of the windshield over bumps. On my previous two Spyders. going over a bump would cause the windshield to rotate, not simply bounce.
The 2020 is tighter, when going over a bump the windshield might bounce a little, but it doesn't rotate.
Of course, I've only got 6000 miles on my new Spyder, so the jury is still out.
 
A hint, that seems to work for a lot of us. Do not ride with the windshield at the very bottom position. Click it up a notch or two higher. So far, no issues. 46K on the 2014.
 
Mine was far from the bottom. I had mine as always all the way up. Been thru many windy days and hwy speeds with no issues until now. I am just over 37k now.

I was north of 70 and leaning forward... SMACK right on the top of my helmet! LOL definitely surprised me.

Should not ride with it ALL the way up either.
From either position always slightly adjust it to take the slack out of the maxed out bottom/top position.

Man how much were you leaning to get the windshield to hit your helmet.

When mine broke and hinged backwards , it may have only been a few inches off the dash top and no where near the handlebars.
 
I learned early on here on SL from SpyderAnn just a tiny bump of the switch to keep the windshield off the bottom stop. I still routinely check the pivot arm and seldom ride with it all the way up.

My experience with the 2010 and then the 2014 is that the windshield arm breaks because the windshield rocks from side to side twisting around the arm.
My non-calibrated observation with the 2020 Spyder is that the windshield is held in place tighter and doesn't twist anywhere near as much as on previous models.

Yes this looks the case and although it appears to be the same windscreen arm (since 2010) the 2020 do seem stiffer and less likely to twist as much as earlier models.
 
Well went out and started the tear down while I am waiting for the Noboot replacement arm.

Looks like the most of the side to side movement would be about 3/4 raised position. The lower and higher positions seemed to stiffen it up.

Now I was just doing this with the right and left hinges by hand and seeing how much play/movement would be. This is still with the windshield bar still installed on the hinge arms.

Don't forget to apply a bit of heat to those four screws as they are often well and truely locked in there. It's been known to snap the screw head off and then your in all sorts of problems.
