Why so long...

Per the Operator's Guide, the break-in period for the 14 RT is 3000 miles...why so long? During the break-in period we are to
- Avoid full throttle acceleration
- Avoid prolonged riding
plus a couple of other things. I don't exactly understand what is meant by "avoid prolonged riding". Avoid prolonged riding seems to mean don't take any long trips, say like 8-10 hour rides in a day. Or, does "avoid prolonged riding" mean don't ride at a constant RPM for prolonged periods? I think (hope) riding for a prolonged time at a constant RPM is what should be avoided.

I know some 14 Spyder RT owners have taken long trips. So, what does "avoid prolonged riding" really mean?

My guess would be the rpms shouldn't be constant. We're headed for Florida in a few days and I plan to take it easy for the first five hundred miles or so.

Typically during break in periods on other vehicles you avoid prolonged constant RPMs.

I guess it helps move the load through engine components around and reduces heat spots in a specific area.

Like you said, it doesn't make sense not to ride for extended periods.

It takes a while for all of those new surfaces inside the engine to get "comfortable" with each other... ;)
If they want 3,000 miles for the process; so be it!
I can muster-up enough restraint for that long! :D

Wasn't everybody just griping about the short intervals between servicing?
You should be happy they addressed the issue.

That may be about a year and a half to two years for me. roflmao

.

Due to bad weather, my break in time has been extended, i now have 2200 miles on my new 14 since January 11th

Bob, you must be suffering from PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome) or you haven't had your second cup of coffee yet this morning.
I wasn't complaining about anything, simply asking a couple of questions. The break-in period for the 998cc twin was 500 miles (I believe) and is 3000 miles for the 1330 ACE triple, wondering why the big increase. Second question was what does "avoid prolonged riding" during the 3000 mile break-in period really mean; don't go on long (prolonged) rides or avoid prolonged riding at constant RPMs? I think (hope) it means the latter.

My guess as well. Might use the ECO Mode shifting points for the first 500 miles or so and will definitely vary the RPMs frequently for a few thousand miles or so.

I've been avoiding "prolonged riding", since September 16th...
Whatever the bike needs; it'll gladly get!
I just want the chance to RIDE!!:ohyea::yes:

I am finding conflicting info in the online version of the Owners Manual. On page 121 they say that the break in inspection is 1,000 km.

I am guessing that the suggestions about prolonged riding have to do with the first 500 miles or so--which would be similar to all other brands of motorcycles that I have owned.

Varying the speeds is very good for break in. Parts get acclimated to each other better than getting "wore in" at one location.

Tires and brakes should get about 300 miles before beta testing.

Also, IMO--don't beat the heck out of the new machine directly out of the dealers driveway. I have always given my machines a good 500 miles before I start the testing. Speed limits are okay--but I don't recommend red lining and tire spinning.
