who said a turbo spyder could not be done?well look at this.

Might as well sell the Spyder and go and buy a Trirod for that price.

:agree: I'm trying to figure out where my Spyder is 'lacking'...lemme see...with the hindle, green, and juicebox settings maximized, I'm probably a little over 4 seconds (4.5 seconds stock) 0-60...certainly much fast than out of the box...acceleration on the highway is just fine...I don't feel like this bike needs a tremendous boost...there isn't much on the road that can move faster than the Spyder...oh yeah, a Toyota Prius :joke: Then again, some people always want faster and faster (most of us!)...I'm interested in seeing what people think when they get it...however, for $5000+, I'll pass...

I know there has been speculation, and I'm sure the turbo won't be cheap. However, before we criticize, we should let them set a price. I don't think I'll get the turbo, but I love seeing new things being developed for our toy.

I still haven't gotten a good answer about what they plan to do about the clutch. :dontknow:

Lamonster, I spoke to Barnett Performance and in 30 days they will have a updated clutch and spring kit for the Spyder available. Your clutch worries are about to be gone... Also, this 30 days conveniently coincides with the estimated release of the Aerocharger turbo kit to the public. ETA January of next year.

That's good to hear you have looked into this, hope it works out. We worked with Barnett on the BonnaValk project. :doorag:

Like I said in another post, when my motor goes I'll be buying a Busa for around 5K and putting that in the Spyder for my play toy. :2thumbs:

I just don't see the 998 turbo holding up very long with that high compression motor and that clutch configuration but I could be wrong.:dontknow:
You still are limited by the traction control unless you plan on getting rid of that like I'll have to do with the Busa.

Even so a stock Busa will put out more HP and I'm pretty sure will hold up longer. :doorag:
Regarding the compression, the actually CC'd compression of the Spyder motor is around 9:1. Hence the ability to run 87 octane in it. Ken at Evoluzione also offers a new piston to make the compression 11:1 so you can run premium fuel and get the extra horsepower that you are missing.

In the Aerocharger turbo testing the 998 has been VERY strong, very reliable and easily able to handle the 5-6PSI of boost with pump gas and throwing NO ECU ERROR CODES!!!!!!!! The key is in proper fuel management and each Aerocharger turbo kit will feature their AeroCommander piggy back (similar to the 2 brothers juice box) to keep your motor safe and running.

On getting rid of the traction control.. if a guy wanted.. and I am just saying.. you can move your rear wheel sensors to the front wheels... speedo will still work, stability will still work... TCS just wont...

Plus if your putting a better clutch (I responded to your other comment) and a drag radial on your spyder and your turbo (you will want one, its wicked fast!!!!) you should be good to go!

One comment though - on the Aerocharger kit, the clutch and drag radial are NOT required. I am just doing them for a bit of more fun... But the Spyder is completely reliable and driveable with their turbo kit with a stock clutch and rear tire.

BRP claims 10.8 to 1 compression. I find it hard to believe it's that far off. I believe the reason they can run 87 is because they are backing off the timing.

If the ''T'' in RT stood for turbo I would have already put my money down. I'm sure BRP has some plans for the RT power plant--probably won't be a turbo though.:f_spider:

Michael:doorag:
As soon as RT's start becoming available, Aerocharger will be looking at what it takes to make their kit work on it.

Not arguing with you, but if you look at what Spyder performance mods cost...

Mufflers (500-700)
Juicebox (250)
Airbox (250)
O2 eliminator (75)

So your at ~$1300 in performance mods and your getting maybe 10HP? We'll have to wait for official Aerocharger performance/dyno results.. but I wouldnt be surprised if you see a 50% improvement in Spyder performance in a supported package thats completely drivable.

ALL that stuff above is part of kit, in a optimized package. PLUS you get a wide band controller for REAL tuning (those are $250-300 by themselves) boost gauge, etc... The Aerocharger kit will be VERY cost effective given the amount of stuff that people typically put on their Spyders. And you'll blow the uh.. no doors.. uh... you'll blow the 3rd wheel off every other spyder on the road!

This could prove to be a popular kit for RT owners - but a big concern will be voiding the warranty.

Might want to get you one of these too. :doorag:

LOL

The Aerocharger kit is wrapped and has a heatshield over the housing. It holds in heat and keeps it off you!

One thing that we've noticed - when you actually give the Spyder FUEL and your running 91+ octane, the exhaust is much cooler on a normal Spyder.

The motor also runs alot cooler. People have overheating issues all over, if you fatten it up a bit, put some 91 octane in it... she'll definitely run cooler.

One thing I didnt mention, the Aerocharger muffler sounds GOOD!!!

Tri-Rods are like 50-60K and last I heard... they are out of business.

They might not be forever though - there is always hope!

I don't believe they started out that high. But I always wanted one of those.

I just think dropping in so much money on the Spyder is crazy, specially since I paid around $16K for it.

Total cost of ownership.. 16K plus 5 or 6K for turbo = 21 or 22K...

Still less than half the cost of a slower tri-rod that doesn't exist anymore. ;)

Tri-rods were VERY cool.. if money was no object...

For that, I was looking at a T-Rexx before I found the Spyder... just couldnt bite off the cost with the spyder being a third of the cost of the T-Rexx.

I would still rather have a "2 seater" in a side by side than I would a motorcycle style Spyder. The T-Rexx is like a street legal go-kart, not a 3 wheeled motorcycle. I'd rather have the street legal go-kart! :D

I'd want to see some dyno run files(with AFR graphs).....How much more torque is it makin at 5-6k rpm?
Dyno and AFR are coming. Regarding torque.. in 3rd gear my Spyder broke loose and the TCS came on at 6000RPM. And this was a 35MPH cruise and then I opened it up. So I'd say the torque is... uh... :2thumbs:

I am not saying that you cant wing the Spyder to redline with the turbo, but you don't really have to anymore. The Aerocharger can make boost by revving in neutral due to their variable vane technology. That also means that at low RPM - IE 2000 RPM under load the Spyder makes boost and scoots.

Once we get through the final "production" gear install, dyno, and final tuning, I hope to write a full review of the kit. In fact, I've probably been a bit too close to this (not that I am biased or anything) but might even get a different Spyder owner in the Kansas City area to perform the write up and impression change from bone stock. Actually it would be nice if a person with a stock (or close to stock) Spyder in the KC area could bring it out for a little side by side reality check when it warms up a bit. Volunteers?
