Who is a former Goldwing rider?

Just curious, what makes your wife uncomfortable? Is it how her body fits on the seat? In that case the 'wing very well may be more comfortable for sitting on. But if the sideways pull while going around corners and a feeling of being thrown off is the problem going to a 'wing trike won't solve that.

On the trike it is well-known in the trike community that you need to put pressure on the foot board opposite of the way you are turning.
If turning left, put pressure on the right foot board and... turning right, put pressure on the left foot board.
This works very well for both the driver and passenger. Keeps you from feeling like the trike wants to throw you off.
I use this same method on the Spyder - works with it too.

I tried telling my wife this but of course she doesn't listen, she never does listen to me but if anyone else told her this she would believe it. lol :banghead:

I had one that was a 2008 model. I currently ride an ST1300 which I will sell once I take delivery of my new RT. Btw, the ST is much more fun to ride than my GL was. I still own a couple of scooters. The most recent is my 2020 Honda PCX. For around town there is no better bike to ride. Light, nimble, and has plenty of power to ride anywhere but the interstate.

After my 2nd Goldwing, I switched to a blue ST1300. Loved that bike, but it was pretty hot to drive. My wife had an first year FJR at the time and it was scalding hot. You could burn your hand on the tank at times. I installed a auto cruise control on the ST, that was really nice. Good winter project. Learned a LOT about taking off tupperware.... something that needs to be done to do about anything on a RT.

Hope you enjoy the RT as much as I am.

Tom

I'm expecting to go to a 'Wing trike before long. We didn't look at them too seriously due to price difference, but the wife just isn't a comfortable on the RTS as she originally thought, so she never rides on it anymore. She loves when we borrow my brother's 1800, but is still concerned with being on two wheels. So if I want to keep riding, gotta make momma happy.

Wahrsuul, You should take a look at the "Sturgis R18" Goldwing reverse trike conversions...The Sturgis company is working on the 2018 and newer GW conversions now...Should be available in the spring of 2022...

I have ridden the R18 and LOVED it...But it lacked 3 features I liked better on my Spyder...Poor reverse, no parking brake and it had a clutch ...The 2018 & newer GW with the DCT fixes two of those problems...And I think there is a aftermarket parking brake available...larryd

Larry, look again. I believe that the DCT wing has a parking brake, std.

This thread took me on a trip down memory lane. The original gold wings from mid to late seventies were naked motorcycles, with point ignitions.

I did a tune-up on a clients and had a chance to ride it to check on the effects of timing advance and I think I would buy one if they were still available today. Zero Tupperware and a low center of gravity.

I have just bought a new RTL which I have yet to ride. Waiting for some rain to wash the salt from the roads. I also have a January 2021 GW DCT which I don’t want to part with, it’s a lively ride. The RT was an 80th present to myself 😎

I’ve wanted a spyder since 1969 when I seen one in the Santa Claus parade.finally was able to get my new 2019 f3 limited this year. I’ve had 6 bikes over the years and the wife has had two.we both started to loss interest in them and finally sold them.with the new toy I’ve got the bug again for riding.now I just have to get the wife interested again lol

Part of the reason I bought a Spyder was that my wife likes to ride with me, as a passenger. When I decided that the Goldwing was just too heavy I first thought to just buy a lighter bike, like the Triumph T120, but the passenger comfort on that bike is minimal. She loves being on the RT, even more than she did on the Goldwing.

They started by putting wheels on the front end where the skis go. I knew then somebody was thinking, just wish it was me...

They are just snowmobile’s with wheels after all. one day there’s gonna be snow tires for them and I hope to be first in line for them lol

She's disabled, so she doesn't ride often, she's just more comfortable on the GW, I think. Seems the seat is more comfortable and maybe a little bigger. Also the backrest has less curve to it, so that might be part of it. When she's on it, I take it easier around the corners and she's ok with it my driving.

I'd love to get one of the "reverse" 'Wing trikes, but it comes down to price. I can't afford $40K+ for one which is one of the reasons we looked at the Spyders. A used one is MUCH cheaper.

I'm fairly well versed in 'Wings, my brother wore out a GL1500 Anniversary edition. We did a lot of work to that thing to keep it going, but he's hard on his bikes and finally killed it. He's on an '05 1800 now. I've borrowed it a couple of times and she loves the ride. Just finding an 1800 trike I can afford has been a bit difficult.

My other "concern" is that I won't like riding the trike solo. I like the RTS well enough to ride alone when she's not up to it, but will I ride the 'Wing trike? I suppose there's only one way to find out. Maybe I need to find a cheap two-wheeler for myself....
