What's this Clacking/clicking noise from the F3's rear end?

My 2015 F3-S, SE6 has around 1200 miles on it. Since I normally wear a full-face helmet, I have not noticed this noise before yesterday, when I did a short test ride in the neighborhood with no helmet (I know....). After repeated trials, I thought it only occurred going forward, beginning at 10mph while braking. But this morning, further testing revealed that it occurs at low speed without any braking...just coasting to a stop.
Trying to paint a word-picture of sounds is difficult, but here goes: it sounds like a metal-on-metal clacking or clicking sound at the rear axle, and the following points of interest will help (I hope):
1. can only hear it at & below 10mph;
2. only when going forward...not when going backward;
3. frequency of clicks matches rpm of rear wheel;

Before calling the dealer, I thought someone on the forum might have knowledge.

I do hear this on mine sometimes and mine has around 1800 miles on it, but hasn't worried me at all, because I just see it has an unusual noise she makes now and then. The noise hasn't effected my riding, but it will be interesting to find out what your dealer says, should you raise it with them. I will mention this when I have warranty campaign reinforcement done. After filling at fuel station I tend to have to apply lots of pressure on fuel cap to shut it, are you able to shut your fuel cap easy? I will mention this too.

Most folks say it comes from the front wheels and a few say it comes from the rear. it's coming from the brakes. Put the full face helmet back on and drive on. :thumbup:

Exactly what I am planning on doing....great comment! Since the brakes work fine, no worries, huh Mate?!

In the 60s, if my car rattled, I just turned up the radio....same idea.

:agree: This is just a "normal" sound being made by an awful lot of motorcycles from all of the manufacturers. :thumbup:

I agree to verify apply low pressure on the brake pedal and see if it's gone

On the fuel cap if you make sure the key is turned all the way to unlock position and push down on cap you will see the key move and latch turn the rest of the way and your off.:thumbup:

It's not just a matter of turning the key. Those who have had troubles know what the others are talking about. Those who say to turn the key must not have experienced it. It's not every time and I haven't been able to figure out under what circumstances the problem arises, but I have had some major struggles with this on occasion. At other times it just closes with no effort.

I had the same problem. Rear axle adjusters were loose. Tightened them down and no noise went away. Hope this is it for you. Good luck

Thanks for your note! I'd decided to just ride on, but yesterday I rode about 100 miles and could hear it distinctly with the helmet on, so had decided to take it to the dealer in Birmingham. Something is definitely amiss.
I'll take a look today at the adjusters.

Ok...I can't believe it, but I just tightened the right rear axle adjuster screw 1/4 turn and the clacking noise disappeared! :clap::clap:
I rode about 2 miles and never heard one single "clack" from the rear end. Don't ask me to explain it because it makes no sense that a tiny adjustment like that can do that....but I'm really glad it did!!
Thanks again for the tip...saved me at least a day and 70 miles to the dealership, not to mention the rolled-back-eyes look they might have given. :joke:

I normally add a slight amount of tighten to the adjusters, after the rear axle has been torqued.

The odd thing about your post is that if the axle was tightened properly, there should be no movement in the rear wheel that would make the adjuster click. Not sure why it worked but glad it did.

I've only experienced this once, but I put a shot of WD40 in the cap, worked the key a bunch of times, gave it one more shot of WD40 and haven't had any problems since. Just my 2¢:doorag:
