What do I need a freewheel remover tool for?

I'm going senile, I know it. UPS just delivered an Amazon package with a ParkTool FR-8 FREEWHEEL REMOVER. I remember ordering it, but not why. I'm pretty sure the purchase was prompted by a thread I was reading a couple of weeks ago. I'm hoping someone knows what I'm talking about before I check into the assisted living down the road.
