• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

what a crying shame

In 1993, I took a month and visited Russia. This was just after glasnost, but I had no delusions about the risks I was taking. I did everything I could to avoid provoking the authorities in any way and ultimately I had a wonderful trip (even though I was a little concerned when the police in Siberia confiscated my passport for a week.

This guy goes to the most repressive, possibly the most unhinged and paranoid place on earth and decides it will be fun to remove a propaganda poster from his hotel for a souvenir. WTF did he expect was going to happen to him?

I'll save my tears for the seven sailors who lost their lives in a maritime collision due to no fault of their own, while serving their country (us - you and me), not some entitled idiot who thought he should be able to get away with pranks in North Korea just as he doubtless did back home.

He ought to be facing treason charges for the difficult position he is putting the U.S. in. But, it doesn't work that way either unfortunately.

I think it's wrong to blame the victim here. He was studying in China and was invited on the excursion to N. Korea by fellow students. The NKs say he was stealing a poster, but it doesn't mean he did. And why do you think he was "entitled"?

He was probably spotted as a Yank and arrested as a hostage. However unadvisable it was to see foot there in the first place, he was victimized by that regime.

I mourn with his family.:pray::pray:

We should get back the other Americans being held there and then go after the NK government with extreme prejudice.

I am not blaming the victim, I am blaming the American society not preparing young people for true consequences of there actions.
No child should have do go through what he went through, yet he should have known that his actions would produce consequences.
Remember Micheal Fay? Everyone was up in arms because he was sentenced to be caned in Singapore for theft and vandalism.
Another situation where an American could have gotten away with what he did with a hand slap in the USA, not so in Singapore.
Or how about Ryan Lochte in Rio?

Reminds me of an earlier thread about people taking pictures at the BRP plant when they were not supposed to, and then stealing parts from off of the line.

It all boils down to a lack of respect, if it says no pics, then it means no pics. Do not touch doesn't mean everyone do not touch but you. People used to respect you, your well being, and your things, the reason was that they worked just as hard for their things as you did for yours! Now it is an entitlement society where everything you have worked for and earned, they think it was stolen from them. Therefor they have every right to do whatever they want to you, and with your things. After all it is just retaliation for how you achieved what you have achieved.

When in a foreign country you better be aware of their laws because they will enforce them. You may think they are a little third world county that doesn't matter, but still have the RESPECT to honor their laws and wishes. It may seam trivial to you, but it is not your law, it is theirs and you should have the respect to comply with it.

Young people want to go to countries where laws for the drinking age is lower, some drugs are legal, and many other things that are not legal in their country are okay. They want to take advantage of the lack or leniency of those portions of the law. They should also then be aware of the strictness of the laws in other areas and have the same respect for those.

In this case, yes he was a victim of the prison and the country, yet the country was also a victim of his lack of respect!

what they just said on tv was that he was going to school in china. when there on a break they asked who would like to go see north korea, so a few said they would like to. he was one of them. after that no one really knows if he took the poster or not.

If that is the case, why was he the only one of the group to be detained and jailed?

The thing is, we probably will never know all the facts so it's hard to say whether he brought this on himself or not.

I have seen video of him taking down the poster. It has been broadcast on the major news outlets repeatedly. Not that it matters in NK.
