WATER PUMP LEAKING OIL

Here are two pics that I collected while researching this for my spyder before taking it in.
The first pic shows the water pump/clutch housing. The red wire is in the water pump weep hole. An oil leak would come from the area where the seal is right across from the water pump weep hole.
The second pic you can see the "gap" between the water pump weep hole and the oil side.
The water pump and oil seal share the same "outlet" space on the motor. This area is VERY difficult to see and almost impossible to see with the plastics on. I have some pics of mine on another computer but to get the pics I had to remove the trunk to see.:sour:

From my understanding it's much more common to have a coolant leak there since it's under pressure. The oil is not under pressure at the oil side of that seal so I'd imagine an oil leak to be fairly minor??

I rode mine for about 300-400 miles with a coolant leak at the weep hole and just kept an eye on the coolant level before each ride. Probably went through 10-12oz. Nothing major.
Good Luck Guys!

Excellent photos. To phrase it another way, the water pump shaft has two seals on it -- one "mechanical" seal on the end where it passes into the water system and a conventional rubber seal on it at the other end where the shaft passes into the oil system and is driven by the gear drive. A leak at either seal will drip thru the weep hole which is between the two seals.

On my RT I found I can see the weep hole without removing any plastic. You need a swivel mirror on the end of a telescoping extension. Go in from behind the radiator and play around until you get the right place and right angle. Lots of patience and you have to know exactly what you're looking for. Your photo shows it clearly. Good flashlight helps, too. Recently I actually watched it leak while the engine was running so I could confirm proof-positive it was the weep hole and not coming down from somewhere else. I watched the drips come out of the weep hole and run down the housing. BRP asked my dealer to photograph it before they authorized the fifth replacement as mentioned in an earlier post. My dealer got good photos of the dripping taking place and sent them off to BRP.

weep hole

i was able to see the weep hole with an inspection mirror and flashlight. no coolant visable at all. just a little oil down in the hole. whatever was leaking i think was coming from the rad. hose with the worm clamp. or from the evap cannister hose, that arntufun reminded me, purges on occasion. got it good and hot two times, no further leakage. thanks everybody for the help and information.

BRP CUSTOMER SERVICE

i just got off the phone with Alex @ BRP CUSTOMER SERVICE... i told him about the oil leaking through the weep-hole of the water pump, and he said there is nothing he can do to help with the situation... he said that the dealer would need to speak with the BRP Technical Dept. to get resolution on this matter... let's see where that gets us...
more to come... :banghead:

Uh Ohhhh

Almost done with a miriad of mods on Teds Red Sled 2011 Spyderfest Eddition RT-S & was doing an oil change last night & noticed what looked like coolant on the garage floor under the Spyder:( & I thought I was almost ready to ryde again:banghead:

UGH!....:sour:

I've got a few friends who are big long time Aprilia bike owners with basically the same motor. Leaking at that shaft is SUPER common, both coolant and oil. From what those guys tell me is that they have them fixed when the bike is under warranty. If the bike is NOT under warranty they let it be, unless it starts leaking really bad, then they do it over the winter.

I'd be willing to bet that there are more leaks on others spyders but they just don't notice it....most are pretty minor leaks.

With a minor leak you can use Gold Bond radiator sealer.
In a pinch i've had great success with Powered red pepper. nojoke

:yikes: Not a good idea on a cooling system this small, or with an alloy engine. That stuff can gum up small passages and cause bad problems! Save it for your '65 Ford pickup! nojoke

dave, check the worm gear hose clamp just below the water pump. it could be a little loose. i did mine over the weekend. i tightened it 1 1/2 turns without killing it. it may have been the source of my leak. i have read in the past where this clamp can loosen over time. also check your weep hole for coolant, as explained earlier in this thread.

I guess i got lucky with the Spyder, Only used a little just enough to keep antifreeze where it's supposed to be.
Apples to oranges, I've used the pepper a few times on tractor or two after a piece of laurel or brush would poke though the radiator, Pinch the fins with a needle nose, then the sealer.
The last time i had to do that was on my Kubota 7600, holding for a few years now.

Should we even ask what the total bill was? Ironically, I just got a call today that my spyder is fixed from a shaft leak on the water pump side of that repair. I didn't ask, but mine is less than a year old and better be under warranty.....:sour:

Also, does anyone know if there is a warranty on repair work? especially a warranty on work that was paid for??

i was quoted one price, and it actually came out cheaper.... $200+...
also, YES, POWERSPORTS of GREENVILLE told me today that 'repair work' is warranteed... 30 days by them and 90 days by BRP....

good deal dan

that doesn't seem to bad, considering the degree of difficulty. i hope it lasts a very long time:thumbup: has anybody else paid out of pocket for this repair lately ? what did it cost ?
