Warming Up Engine

How long do you usually warm up the engine? I find that if I do not warm it up about 5-10 mins, my engine will sometimes quit out on me between 1-2 gear sometimes. This usually occurs until the engine runs for awhile. Is this common?:dontknow:

That does not sound normal.
My spyder did not like it if I took off right away in cooler weather, 50-60 degree weather I live but 5-10 minutes seems excessive.
I start the engine, put my helmet on with goggle and face mask, spyder was usually good to go.

Something doen't seem right. I start mine put in gear and go no problems in not letting it warm up.

At least one bar, then warm it up the rest of the way while riding it easy--Now if your jumping right into traffic, well I'd wait till you see possible 2 bars but at least wait for one anyway-- depending on the weather it could take a few minutes of course but I always start mine early.

I start mine and then shut the door, put on gloves, and back out. Regardless of the temp, that's about all the warmup it gets. Do you have a stalling or a hesitation issue? Some EFI vehicles are far more temperature driven when transitioning from open loop mode.

I don't think the engine cutting out is common at all. You probably need to have a dealer look into it.

Same here, mine will normally be at 1 bar pretty quickly and by the time I make it to the paved road I am up to at least 2 or 3. Then I can take off like a rocket.

I let the idle speed settle in at 1400rpm or so (A couple of seconds...), then grab 1st gear and it's off to the races... :thumbup:

Never had a problem doing it this way.

Same here. Little to no real warm up time given. My Spyder will hesitate a bit if its cold out when I do this (under 50) but rarely stalls (only a couple of times when the temps were below 30).

I have not seen any difference if I warm the :spyder:up to one bar or just take off when the idle settles around 1400 RPM's. Only bike I ever had to let idle to warm up to ride was the Harley. The others, BMW, Honda's, Yamaha's, and various air cooled dirt bikes 2 and 4 stroke, just start and then ride off. Never really saw a problem.

I never warm it up, I just start it and drive off easy at first.
If you have warm it for 5 to 10 minutes i think that's too long' it should be checked out by your dealer.

In Vermont when it was in the 40s I would let in warm up a couple of minutes before taking off. I noticed that if I did not it would act like it would not want to go in to 2nd gear. I had no problems with it stalling though.

Manual says to let it warm to 1-2 bars. I usually abide by this. Warmup time is less when it's hot out for sure.

When I do take off without proper warmup - I do find myself needing to feather the clutch more/play with throttle on takeoff until she's warm.

The warmup time isn't just about reaching good operating temp --- it's about getting the oil doing it's job before putting things under load.

10 minutes sounds excessive. I've noticed around 5 to be typical - depending on weather, how long Spyder has sat, etc....

Once I gear up, I get on, start 'er up, wait for the garage to close, then take off.

I have my Spyder in a heated garage. Even in cold weather riding (0 to 30 degrees F) I have not warmed up the engine. Start up, back out, lower garage door, and drive off. Have not had any problem with stalling.

I have also had no problems with start up and run after machine has been parked in cooler weather when at work. We are talking 30 degrees F or higher though.

I ride for fun in colder weather when possible--but don't take it to work if its between 20 and 30.

Do you use a Battery tender?

Mine used to stall when going from 1st to 2nd... Then come back to life... I found that as long as I use my Battery tender at least once a week this issue went away on it's own.

Certainly this may not be your issue at all... Just tossing a thought out there... But something is not right with it stalling on you...

Mine used to stall when going from 1st to 2nd... Then come back to life... I found that as long as I use my Battery tender at least once a week this issue went away on it's own.

Certainly this may not be your issue at all... Just tossing a thought out there... But something is not right with it stalling on you...

True with fuel injection but I usually let it warm up one bar...

Doesn't sound like battery as the bike is running before it clips out on him. However, I am a huge Battery Tender Plus fan! I wouldn't do without one...
