VSS fault light, Check DPS and LIMP Home Mode

Hey guys!

I had some work done on my SM5 today where the rear wheel was taken off and put back on - but on the way home from the Dealer the cluster started scrolling the following:

SOLID light VSS icon on the cluster
BLINKING light for Check Engine icon on the cluster
SCROLLING Check DPS rolling on the cluster
SCROLLING LIMP Home Mode rolling on the cluster.


I pulled over, did the usual - key off for 5 mins, then off-on three times, wait 10mins, etc.... And still got all of the codes described as above starting with the VSS light being solid on start up and the DPS, Engine Light and LIMP Home Mode all coming on shortly after I started to move.


ACTIVE CODES I pulled from the cluster while this was happening are:
P2545
U0122
C0051

The shop manual all indicate the steering angle sensor and/or DPS connection or magnet, etc... My Spyder is back at the Dealer now getting checked out. The rear wheel speed sensor is in spec. I have checked and not found any issues with the relays up front - swapped them out place to place and no change.

Was hoping maybe it was something that was seen before so I could help the Dealer troubleshoot.


Thoughts on what the issue could be?

Hey Doc - no McCruise. Both rear tail/brake lights are the stock type bulbs. The rear signal lights are LEDs (part of the Tripple Play) and all seem to be functioning ok as normal. Been running this setup for more then 20,000km.

They said they reset and cleared BUDS just before I left the shop after the initial service.

The tech is going through the service manual and he has been checking things to do with the angle sensor - for example, the connection up front and I think he said he was going to load test the circuit.


Fingers crossed they find the issue.

Just talked with the tech - they cleaned out the sensor connector again, then again... and now the code does not seem to be appearing. They've said to come pick it up - if it happens again it is likely they'll order a new sensor in.

I'm on the way there now to pick up my SM5 and go for a test ride - perfect timing - just about to finish work for the day.

We'll see....

Don't know if this helps but you might check relays. Mine had dps issues and turned out to be a bad relay

Had the same issues with mine and the dealer ended up replacing the rear speed sensor. Problem went away. BTW they had cleaned and reset that sensor about 200 miles previous to this problem showing up. That is why they just went ahead and replaced it.

Thanks Steve! But no worries my friend! .

Between the time I left work to go up to get my Spyder and before I got there the code happened again. So, they wanted more time to check things out. So, they kept it again that evening, checked the rear wheel speed sensor, did some electric load testing on the sensor up front (The Steering Angle Sensor), cleaned up and air'ed out both sensor connections and got up and cleaned the DPS magnet on the steering column, just to go that extra distance. They test rode it for 30km and the codes did not re-appear.

I picked it up the next day (last evening) and went for a good long and welcomed ryde ( totally missed by spyder! ). So great to be ryding again! All seems fine after a 240km test ride, but the tech did say the sensor's may be on their way out.

I'm back on the road!
