Venting about our Spyder

Spyder Couple

New member
We bought our 2011 spyder RT-S in May. We loved it and had great times. Since August 20
we have had nothing but problems.
August 20 riding home from seeing our son the Check engine light came on and off 4 times in 12 miles.
Took it into dealership the following tuesday and they found nothing except they were having trouble
getting the last
cyclinder to fire correctly. Suposedly they called BRP and was told to check the fuel filter.
About a weeks later hubby and I were out window shopping and on the way
home we got Check engine light as well as the check DPS light and it went into limb mode all at the same time plus
it was over heating that was on sunday. From reading posts on SpyderLovers hubby knew how to check for default codes
and came up with P0175. Called dealership tuesday morning and was told to bring in on Thursday.
Took it to dealership and when we pulled it gas was pouring out of spyder down both sides (they did fix gas leak).
Called the following wednesday and was told it was ready.
We went and picked it up when we asked about the default code he said they did get any.
About a week ago hubby was taking it to work as he has done alot since we bought it
and was stuck in traffic on Hwy 26 because of an over turned car.
The spyder keep over heating and dieing. What was usually a 45 min drive turn out to be 2.5 hours.
We stopped riding it so much because we would get Check engine light. Now today we have Check engine light
and parking brake failure.
We paid a lot of money for this bike and can't get any satisfation from our dealer on any of these issues.
We knew there would be some issues as hubby had been reading this forum for a while before we bought our spyder.
We thought that when the issue happened it would be taken care of. But no, we get told by the dealer ship we are
stupid and didn't get anything taken care of.
We have plans to make some long trips next spring and summer with the spyder.
It has helped my depression alot to get out on the bike and ryde since losing 3 of my grandkids.
Going back to a 2 wheeler isn't an opition for me as I can't hold one up anymore.
I would like to get a phone number for Carlos if anyone would be so kind. We are getting so frustrated.
We have been told to take the bike to another dealer 68 miles away to see if we can get some answers and get
things taken care of. We are going to be taking it to the other dealer on saturday so hopefully
we can get answers and issues taken care of.
I want BRP to be aware of the treatment we got at our dealership where we bought our Spyder and see if
they can help us get the help the bike needs. I don't want to quit ryding till I have too (weather stuff).
Thank you for letting me vent I fell a little better.
Sorry this is so long. I hope this isn't to confusing and is understandable

Cindy

Very sorry to hear of your problems with :spyder2:.

It sounds like you are working with one of those "bad" dealers we hear about from time to time.

Good advice to contact Carlo at BRP. The link was posted above.

This kind of customer service is one of the problems that BRP will have to deal with in the near future.

Please keep us informed of the progress of your mechanical issues.

Feel Your Pain

I can soooo relate to your problems. As to date my wife's Spyder has spent over 70 days at the dealer since June 2011 trying to resolve a chronic check engine light, which causes intermittent limp mode and loss of power steering assist. My wife also owns (well is paying for) a 2011 orbital blue RT-S SE5. Really sucks making payments on a product you haven't seen since the beginning of Aug. Our dealer it seems can't fix it and has said to me he wishes to just crate it and send it back to Canada. It's too late to resolve our concerns with this unit so we have been in contact with customer service at BRP and it appears that they will honor our request to buy the Spyder back. But to this date we have not seen the Spyder or received one penny from BRP or the dealer. My wife has gone back and forth on whether to purchase another Spyder. We have really enjoyed riding with our local Spyder Ryder club which makes the decision even harder. There still is my wife's 2 wheeler in the garage for her to ride but as you know it's not the same a riding a Spyder. We will wait and see if the 2012's are any better. I know there aren't any big changes posted between to 2011's and 2012's but if you dig deep into the parts catalog you would see a lot of different part numbers under the plastic between the 2010's and 2011's. I will say it seems odd that we have never been contacted by Carlo. All we can do now is hope it all works out.

Spyder Couple, I do so hope that you find a decent tech. Too many techs these days think that the diagnostics will tell you everything. When fuel is leaking onto the ground, you have to look at the "nuts & bolts", not the computer. Ignition problems, like the spark jumping to the head because of a faulty plug wire, are also often not seen on the computer...especially when you have dedicated knock sensors. Because your Spyder behaved well for a long time, I'm sure your problems can be resolved. A talented and dedicated technician is what you need...and maybe a little help from BRP's dealer tech support group. I hope the new dealer is the ticket. Keep the faith, I'm sure your Spyder can be fixed.

Sorry about your issues - are you using S&K or Pro Calibre? I've used Cycle Sport in Salem, but they can't do warranty work anymore. I've heard some good things about PC too.

Given the truly crummy state of our economy, I don't get dealers who don't provide decent customer service! If gas is coming out of the bike, any mech would know why, and where - and realize the bike is not safe to ride!! I recommend that you use your cell phone to photograph the dash anytime you see a fault - keep records!

I have a covered trailer, and would be happy to help you haul your Spyder to whatever dealer you want.. Just because they have a fancy new building, doesn't mean they're any good. Let me know.

Bill, Thank you for offering us your trailer. It is very nice of you to do that. SK did fix the gas leak and that was all they did.

We were taking it to SK but not anymore, we are going to be going to PC and hope we can get some isssues taken care of. I don't understand the lack of Customer Service either.
I know of a few people that have issues with SK so it really isn't to surprising.

Thank you all

I am hoping for a wonderful outcome with our spyder.

We are taking the Spyder to Pro Caliber saturday morning and dropping it off, we will see what happens.

There is a link above to contact Carlos you should call and find out what is going on. I know BRP and Carlos will be calls from me next week to make sure the spyder get fixed.

Take Care

The Portland outfit is like Kaiser - volume = $$. Pass on anything that isn't easy to identify. Let me know how PC responds - when Cycle Sports was still in the CanAm business, they would ride my Spyder for several miles - AFTER the repaired it, to make sure the fix worked. Always called me in a couple of days to make sure everything was OK. I really miss that level of service.

The offer stands, if you need it!

Well we got the spyder to Longview to pro caliber without any issues this morning.
They will start taking a look at it on monday. They were very nice and friendly.

WE will see what happens as the week goes on.

Thank you everyone

Got a call from Carlos at BRP

I got a message today from Carlos at BRP saying they know the problems we are having with our spyder and they know where it is at and there will a Tech following the progress
of our spyder to make sure it is taken care off.
I am to emotional when it comes to our spyder and the message made me cry as it felt like a heavy burden was lifted from my shoulders.
I called my Darrell at work and told him and it lifted his spirits also.

I am so happy that BRP is taking care of it customers and that they care.

Just wanted to share a Happy Message

Have a great week everyone, We love this forum

This is really a dealer issue, not a BRP issue.

It's terrific to see Carlos chime in so quickly (Thanks!). Interestingly, there was a BRP rep at the open house last weekend, who spent most of his time in the parking lot taking pictures of owners bikes - less than a minute around the Spyders - perhaps he was the ATV/SxS guy - no one was looking at those,,,

I Called Pro Caliber so see how they were doing on our spyder and was told that they found 6-7 default codes and they have been in contact with BRP about them.

Pro caliber will call me tomorrow to let me know what is going on.

I don't know why SK couldn't find anything. Seems like it would be a no brainer.

The bike will never go back to SK we will go the 1.5 hours to longview for service

Just an oil change with filter is $129.00 as our spyder is over the 6000 miles. I have been told the place in Salem Charges $150 for oil change and spark plug replacement.

Take Care everyone

$150.00 for an oil change and spark plug replacement is a steal compared to most dealerships.

RT issues

Hey Darrell & Cindy,
Good luck with ProCaliber, I was very happy with their scheduling of getting my Spder in for service, and it being done when promised to my satifaction. FYI, you might print out this Thread page and send it to Shawn at SK, if he doesn't already know of the run-around you have been experiencing with their service department, it may enlightened him on his service department. As an optional place to have minor service done, i.e. tire changes, oil changes, etc, you might try Cycle Specialities, formerly Wingman in NE Portland, their hourly rate is cheaper than SK and they do a great job too. It is unfortunate that you have had the bad experience you two have had, the fact that SK has not resolved it, that you had to resort to contacing BRP, and that you must look elsewhere to get your Spyder working as it should.

Awesome

Carlos at BRP called me this morning to ask if I had any questions or concerns about my spyder and he was very nice and friendly. I expressed my concern over the passenger not being able to hear the CB and he said he would look into it and get it taken care of along with the other issues.

Got a call from Ben at Pro caliber and they just got off the phone with BRP and they have to replace spark plugs and wires and then they will take out for another ride and make sure everything is working properly. They also got the CB fixed for the passenger. (I had asked SK 3 times to fix) They also did the update on the brake spring that SK said they did and really didn't do it. Shame on SK for lying to the customer. I have the paper that says SK did the update for the brake spring.
Pro caliber longview is my place to take my spyder for anything it needs.
Parts have been ordered and we should get our bike back early next week. I am so thrilled.

Thank you Carlos and Ben, You 2 are awesome. Can't wait to get my spyder back and go for a ryde.

Throwing in the towel

Hey, Guys!

I'm so happy for you that you've finally gotten your Spyder to a dealership with a service department that seems to care. Hopefully, this will be the last fix necessary.:pray::pray::pray::pray:

On my part, however, I've decided to cut my losses and throw in the towel. :dontknow: Day after tomorrow, I, too, will be riding up to Pro Caliber in Longview with my RT-S and RT-622 trailer - not be be serviced, but to actually trade them in on another vehicle that will be a little - no, A LOT - more reliable.....a 2011 Suzuki M109R LE.

Spydergirl and others know only too well how lucky I was to have a functional, running Spyder to get me back home from Street Vibrations (lack of throttle, parking brake failure, etc). In the fourteen months I've owned my RT-S, it has made more trips to the shop than every other vehicle I've ever owned over the past 45 years COMBINED. :yikes: Three trips to the shop during the months of August and September was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. :gaah::cus::gaah: As you know, I put a fair number of miles on my ride (over 23,000 in less than 14 months) and I must have a ride I can depend upon - and my particular RT-S was not that machine! God bless Spyders! I love them and this breaks my heart. If I ever need to get a "Spyder fix" I can always take Kathy's RT for a spin!:yes:

Michael,

I understang where you are coming from we were close to doing the same.
We were looking at trading in our spyder and getting Darrell a 2 wheeler if this didn't work.
I am so sorry the spyder didn't work out for you. :(

We met because of the spyder back in May just before we bought our spyder I will never forget what you did for me with the pictures and encouragement. :ohyea:
You and Kathy are the greatest friends someone can have.

I hope we can still get together and go on rydes together. (I know spyders ryde in the back or is that the front) I am so confused :opps:

Maybe we can meet for lunch sometime at Denny's :chat:.

Keep in contact my friend and take care of Kathy,
Love ya both
