Using e85

Has anyone ever used E85 in their Spyder? I don't mean only E85 I was thinking about mixing some with my next fill up. Maybe 2 gal. to the 93 octane. Not sure if it would hurt anything. Just a thought.

No I have not. I filled up today with high octane for $15. I consider that a small price to pay to keep my expensive toy running right.

I think if you put any amount of E85 in your Spyder it would mess it up. I certainly wouldn't. Why chance it when you really don't have to??

Interesting question ..... you have folks on this Forum going Apoplectic if you use 87 oct. with only 10% alcohol ................ Using E 85 would be a big mistake ...unless you were Trapped and couldn't move the Spyder without it ....... The Spyder will not be hurt if you use anything from 87 to 94 octane ....but adding extra alcohol is a whole different matter ....jmho .... Mike :thumbup:

BAD thought.....in any vehicle not specifically designed to be "flex fuel" capable.

Spyders are NOT. And the owners manual says a couple of times "Don't do it."

You are proposing using something like E30 and the engine is NOT designed to burn that.

Will it hurt anything......how about you do it for about 15,000 miles and then let us know. :shocked:

Even if it didn't harm the engine, sensors, fuel system, etc, there is a serious loss of power and mpg when using E85. Plus the fact it acts like a sponge to water. I doubt there is really that much saved in using it in any vehicle. Just my humble opinion...

It MIGHT do that.....and other nasty things but we don't know for sure because BRP ain't telling what level of ethanol their recent machines are really designed to withstand.

I personally think that any vehicle company would be STUPID not to design their machines for E15 since it seems to be looming on the horizon.
Then the extra cost to design it to "tollerate" an accidental dose of E85 should be almost trivial.

BRP hints at that by conspicuously NOT giving any specific percentage that is acceptable but saying instead "Use only what blend is government approved." Hinting that E15 might really be OK for the recent models.

I wonder what the manuals say for Spyders exported to South America, where E85-100 is the norm ??

Well I guess all the above should answer your question. I would have to question your motives to even consider it. If it's cheapness you had better think through thoroughly. I have got to wonder about someone who would try this to save a few cents at risk of mucking up a $30,000 machine.

No no no. I put some e85 in my ford ranger one time because it was $1.85 per gallon. That was a bad mistake. Cost me a lot. Had to replace 2 oxygen sensors and a fuel filter to get it to run again. And the ranger has a flex fuel v 6 engine in it. So no its not worth the trouble or repair expense. E 85 is just about nothing but corn syrup with a little gas mixed in. That little $20.00 fill up cost me $300.00 to fix.

Ethyl alcohol is nothing like corn syrup.
