• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Uh-oh - check engine and more :(

Update

So I brought it in to Ray's Sport and Cycle in Grand Rapids, MN a week ago yesterday. They hooked it up to the computer, and the codes were inconclusive. They tore it apart and found there's no compression on the first cylinder. They told me they'd get to it in a couple days, and I just called them for an update. They are just putting it in the shop today at 4pm, and they think it's going to be a full day before they can even tell me if it's going to be covered under the BEST warranty. Ugh... Not a great experience for my new toy, considering riding season in Minnesota is only a few months...

No compression?
How could a reputable dealer do that to a customer? They HAD to know that the engine was sour in the bike! :gaah:

DON'T let them try to play games with you regarding the warranty coverage...
I'm sorry to hear that this has happened to you. :banghead:
Once the bike is fixed; it will prove to have been worth the effort!
Please keep the updates comin'!

I didn't buy the Spyder from a dealer, I bought it from a private party here on SpyderLovers.com. I was told that all the maintenance had been done, and there were no issues. Thankfully it came with the transferrable BEST warranty, and hopefully it will cover this problem.

So you're recommending I have the battery changed while it's taken apart?

I wonder if it's standard policy for them to replace the oil filter, since they'll probably have to drain all the oil anyway for this service.

Nothing like a fresh battery and clean connections. 2011 is about right for battery replacement.

Just a thought.

Don

you do kmow that your spyder has to be at full operating temps.like riding for at least 15 ments befor cheking the oil or it will show loe,and if you put too much oil in the extra will go in to your airbox. and yes 3 years is about right for a battery to go bad,and make sure to keep it on a battery tender at all times not in use.:chat:

FYI,

There are two very very good dealers in MN,

Ollie's in Alexander
Caswell's in Mora

Consider them next time?

Yeah, I had debated Caswell, it's about the same distance from my place in Superior, WI - 70 miles. I have family in Grand Rapids, and Can-Am said the GR dealer was platinum level just like the Caswell guys. I think I'll go the other way next time.

HARD To believe there would be no compression on a Spyder with that few mi. on it...Something doesn't sound right there....
Have not heard of that being a problem with Spyder engine...Not saying it is not possible....But unlikely> I would have to see it to
believe it..

Freebob...:doorag:

I guess I'd be the one to experience the anomaly. I just talked to them and they have it on the rack right now, so we'll see what they find out.

So they tell me one of the sensors failed and it was running too rich. Carbon buildup on the valves caused some damage needing them replaced. They hope to put it back together tomorrow and fire it up. Hopefully I will get to drive it yet this summer...

I can't help but wonder what kind of damage, due to carbon, the valves have received which makes their replacement necessary...

Ok - so I got it back this weekend and got to put a couple hundred miles on it again. It was good to be back on it.

Here's what they tell me happened: It had a MAP sensor fail, causing it to run in "Rich Mode" - causing a massive amount of buildup on the intake valve. They replaced the intake valve, sensor and some gaskets, and put it back together after clearing the codes, and it's running well. Oddly, they didn't change the oil because they say they didn't need to drain it, but they did change the spark plugs and air filter. They charged an extra $75 for the plugs/filter change (ok with me, I just wish they'd have asked before doing it) and the total cost out the door was about $130, and nearly a month without being able to ride.

The mechanic said he's never seen one of these filters fail on an '11, and he thought it was very rare that it would fail with only 11,000 miles on it. Thankfully that BEST warranty was transferrable, because he said it would have cost about $2,000 for the work that needed to be done.

Crossing fingers for smoother rides in the future. I only got to ride it a month before this all happened...

You got a smokin' deal. It costs more than that to get the plugs changed if it weren't torn down. If it was a sensor failure that caused the plugs to foul they should have been included but $130 is about what an oil change costs. Just sayin' Spyders are a pay to play vehicle.

Sorry to hear about your issues with the :spyder2:. Hoping they get you on the road with a :ani29: that is right on.
