Happy Birthday, Devil Dogs! Semper Fi and ride safe!
Happy Birthday!
I had to look something up. From '67 to '71, when in the Navy, I only knew them as Jarheads, and that was with utmost respect. I don't think I remember that term (Devil Dogs) being used, and that's what I just looked up. I learned something today.
Wow, you must be an older Marine. The silent drill platoon started in 1948. I saw it for the first time in 1963. I would go back every summer if I could.I watched the video and it was inspiring and moving. But, reminded me of when I was in the Corps, we did not use our rifles like batons in a show. They were used for saluting and fighting. The army regularly used weapons for show and musical drill which was impressive. But in my old Marine Corps that did not happen. I see that times have, indeed, changed. Still, Semper Fi
Yup, I am an older Marine. But not THAT old. Was in from 1966 to 1969. I must have missed or forgotten about the silent platoon. What I do remember is we were instructed/trained/drilled with rifles for killing and occasional saluting. I think the silent platoon is great. I just missed remembering it. My loss. Whether you are a Marine of not you should make a point of attending the evening parade at the Marine Barracks in D.C. It's every Friday evening in the summer and I highly suggest you make a reservation. If you weren't a patriot before you go, I assure you will be one when you walk out of this ceremony.
Happy Birthday Marines! Semper Fi
