Trailer hitch question

I bought a BRP trailer hitch for my 2011 RTS, just the hitch no mud flap, no wiring. I am going to use it to hold a Kuryakyn rack. My question is about the axle shaft. Will the stock axle shaft work or do I need a special shaft? If I need a special shaft does anyone know the part #? Thanks in advance for your help, Dan

The BRP hitch installs over the hollow axle, using a special pin (bolt) that slides through the axle. The axle is not removed or disturbed, althought the existing cotter key has to be removed. Not sure if you can get the pin and castellated nut separately. It also requires a cotter key for the drilled pin and nut.

Now that I understand how it attaches, can anyone tell me part # of inner shaft and nut required?
Being that I am not towing a trailer, what are thoughts on using a piece of threaded stock with 2 nuts and cotter pins thru them? TY

I would not use threaded stock it will were the inside of the axel

Make sure it is galvanized, or coat it good with cold galvanizing. A coating of waterproof (synthetic) grease won't hurt, either. They have been known to rust inside of the axles. I don't have the part numbers handy and I don't think they are available separately, but it would pay to check with a dealer.

You could use stainless all thread or stainless bar stock with the ends drilled and tapped using bolts and washers at the ends..
I don't think wear would be an issue if tightened good.

Stainless would be good; but I still wouldn't shove it into place without a liberal coating of grease... :thumbup:

Hey i worked out my trailer issue wired a hopkins adapter from autozone $15 amber tail light three light to two light trailer also changed out the lights on trailer to led found that you have slice the adapter in above the resister diodes for thr led light on the bike worked out fine thanks again please repost this info for others I dont know how to do that yet thanks
