towing while covered.

I just bought the BRP full cover for my RT. I plan to occasionally tow the bike and I bought the cover to protect it from all the stuff my Motorhome kicks up.
Of course the dealer agreed with my decision.
The last comment on the cover instruction sheet states. "do not tow the vehicle with the cover on."

Any thoughts on this warning?
Is it because the cover will destroy the paint?
might it be because they fear the cover will blow off?

Lastly, does anyone defy BRP and tow the bike with the factory full cover?

as an additional issue, I just looked at the bag the cover came in and oN the label it states" SPYDER RT/RTS TRAILERING COVER KIT" GO FIGURE.

I would never cover, the fabric will beat the paint off your spyder.I would get an enclosed trailer that I could use for other storage as well.Nothing is better than a cargo trailer it is a portable garage and can free up your real garage when your home.

my 2 cents,

T K

Towing with a cover will eventually beat up the paint, and will also scuff the windshield and the chrome. Towing will reduce the life of the cover, too. You do less harm by cleaning the Spyder once you arrive at your destination, than in trying to cover it to keep it from getting dirty. JMHO

:agree: That's why I picked up an enclosed Airlite to tow behind my motorhome and it's one purchase that I don't regret making. It's light enough that I can move it around by myself as long as it's empty.

All of the above. Plus it will eventually wear out sooner than you would like.

Might want to check with a company called GEZA covers. They make a specific stretchable cover that fits like a glove and can be used for towing at high speeds etc. I know they have done one for a Spyder, check their site http://www.gezagear.com/

Good luck.

it well beat the paint off your spyder and you well have to repaint it don't do it man get a covered trailer keeps her dry and a place to keep it when you go to see lamonsters or magicmans in daytonia 2011

:agree:with the above. The cover will beat the :spyder2: and scuff the paint. Don't do it man, get an enclosed trailer...just my 2 cents...:chat::popcorn:
I think the dealer just wanted to sell you a cover...:dontknow:

Towing with cover on

I went to Gatlinburg with my open trailer on tow loaded with my covered Spyder. Ken told me that flapping of the cover will rub off the Spyder's paint where contact is made. Well, I even tied the cover down in various places to avaoid this but the rushing wind won so I had to remove the cover. The paint was was marked in many places but not damaged. Rubbing compound removed the spots. I didn't take sound advice and I lucked out. So leave you Spyder open to what ever you encounter. Bugs wash off. The cover's flapping will wear off the paint. the dealer gladly took the cover back as they admitted they advised it would work for towing. I was pleasantly surprised as it was a special order item.
This is the 2nd goodwill gesture they have exhibited. When I brought the RT in for the steering recall work, I, like scores of other owners, complained about the gas smell filling up my garage after a ride.
The service writer said I was the first spyder owner to make that complaint but that he was delivering something the day before using the dealership's RTS demo amd was inundated with gas fumes.
I left the bike and the service manager called me a couple hours later and said the evap cannister was full of gas and that BRP advised them it was due to overfilling the gas tank. He referred to some page in the owners manual that cautioned about overfilling the tank. He said they would replace the cannister under warranty this time and a repeat incident would be on me. Fine with me. A check of the owners manual revealed it does caution about overfilling the tank. But it states that the gas could expand in the heat and leak on a hot engine, not fill up the evap can causing a somewhat different result.

They left out the part that the gas in the EVAP can is what expands, and the overflow vent originally exited right above a portiion of the exhaust. There is a portion of one of the recall / updates that extends this drain to under the bike.

Emissions warranty

I am not sure about our Spyders, but the last time I heard all emissions control items on 4 wheeled vehicles sold in the USA have a Fedreally mandated 5 year 50,000 mile warranty. This includes ECM,O2 Sensors, Catalytic Converters, Purge valves, Charcol Cannisters and Plumbing for said items.

Does anyone know if this applies to the powersports industry? I have been unable to locae anything in my literature.

what size airlite trailer did you get and what was approximate cost? thanks

cover

I just towed my yellow Spyder from Nogallis, Az. to Puerto Vallarta, Mx. I used a blue tarp. I covered it so as not to draw attention to me and the bike. I tied it down as well as I could but 1,000 mi. later the tarp was shredded and my bike had a film over it that was really tough to get off. I won't do that again. It didn't wreck the paint job, but it sure could have. Any West Coaster's want to buy a new 14' utility trailer.
