Took a spirited ride up pikes peak 27 minutes 49 seconds

So just for fun I gave my spyder a decent blast up pikes peak. They told me it takes 55 minutes to get to the top. I heard "time to beat is 55 minutes":roflblack: This was riding 2-up with 6 days worth of luggage on board. I had to pass 4 cars (safely), bottomed out solidly and had to reset the floorboard and got a check engine light somewhere around 13,000 ft elevation. It was fun and we took our time on the way down to check out any scenery we may have missed on the way up. Made it in 27 minutes and 49 seconds. Which is well short of the average race time of 12 minutes (ish)

No clue why the picture shows upside down!

Oh yeah..!!

but way better than that 55 min thing...:roflblack: sounds like you had fun :ohyea: and the nanny got upset...:lecturef_smilie: to bad its not the kind of ryde you take pictures of. If you did on the way down send them along....

:congrats: on your ride to the top :2thumbs: Sounds like fun

It is kinda hard to breath at 14,110 feet above sea level eh? We went up in a ford explorer and it took us much longer. Looks like you had a nice day for it. Was there any snow between the rocks?

Just sayin'............

The 10 min barrier was broken by a bloke in a 'modified' Suzuki SX4 not all that long ago, wasn't it?? I saw a vid of the mods he did to make that possible, & watched his climb  - so I don't think 27 or so mins is all that bad when you consider what you were carrying & the fact that the road wasn't closed for you.... Good Stuff! Hope you enjoyed the views.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I went up it last summer with a bunch of Goldwingers on my 'wing. It seems like it took forever.....tons of traffic....all going slow.....lots of bicycles....lots of wind....and some idiot in a van blocking the lane while waiting for bicyclists. When I got to the top, I stopped and told my wife to get off, because I didn't want to dump the bike in the parking lot with her on it. I was getting lightheaded from the altitude. But the ride IS SPECTACULAR !!
I'd love to do it again without the crowds.

Back when it was all gravel road going to the summit you would have been puckering up as the gravel road was so loose and you where close to the edge of the mountain and could see straight down. Think it was 85 deg at the bottom up top was like 35 deg..Then on the way down it decided to hail/snow and fogged up my windshield.

Now that's it paved I am sure driving is much nicer and faster/safer..

It is still something to put on the to do list :ohyea:

I didn't time my ryde up the peak, but it couldn't have set any record. There were so many cars going up and down, it was impossible to pass.

FYI, I've heard there's something that happens about 11,000 ft on the Spyder, but I can't remember what it is. I never noticed it on mine, though.

My wife took all the pictures. I'll see if I can get access to them.

There was a little snow/ice that could be found. I've played at 11,000 foot elevation many times but usually I didn't have to worry about cars :coffee:

Rhys Millen had the quickest time at the last race with 9:07 in an electric vehicle. The nanny wouldn't give me any more throttle in the corners. I forgot that I also had just filled the tank with gas too... So the bike was as heavy as it was possibly going to be

We went first thing in the morning and there wasn't much traffic because I'm sure many people wait until it's warmer. The cold didn't bother me at all. I'd much rather have clear sailing:ohyea:. On the way out of the park, there was a huge line of cars going in.

I went above 11,000 feet several times this week. Pikes peak was the only place it threw the CEL. It stayed on until I got back below 11,000 feet. Never affected the performance. I checked the oil and made sure it wasn't overheating. Figured the rest would take care of itself.

Wow, what a great ride that must have been!

Here's a short video of the last 1000 feet, to give us East Coasters a sense of what you saw...

If your ever on Maui, Hawaii, another great ride is up Haleakala Volcano. Miles of twisties and beautiful views. Not a speed run, but well worth putting on your bucket list.

A little over 10,000 ft above sea level.

I think that it might have been Karyl, that told us about the "CEL" issue. You end up getting enough altitude under you, that the engine isn't exactly sure why it's up there...
Get it back down closer to Mother Earth, and it calms right down!

My wife and I tried for a spirited ride to the Peak today, but the holiday traffic really slowed us down. When we left around noon, the line waiting to get in was over a mile long. From Pike's Peak we rode to the Royal Gorge near Cañon City. 20150906_111156.jpg 20150906_114452.jpg

Another thing I should point out is the fact that my GPS Zumo was nearly spot on with every elevation sign I saw. I was surprised.

Is that in slow motion???????? Oh that right it's a Harley!
That was slow. You would have heard 990cc's screaming at 7,000+ RPM in my video :roflblack:

Just the traffic in your overlook photo is CRAZY!!! We wanted to see the Royal Gorge but we would have had to stay another day to get it done. The route from Colorado Springs to Pikes Peak to Breakenridge to Rocky Mountain National Park and then to Centennial, WY proved to be a long enough day in itself.

It still amazes me how things have changed over the years in that area..Royal Gorge looks like a amusement park now..

But I would go back again as I like Colorado in general

Yep...'twas me

My '14 (1330) didn't have any issues...but there were a couple 998's that "starved out"...I gave the driver of one a ryde to the top....the 2nd person was 'bummed out' and so stayed with the Spyders....I didn't set any records as I was being a looky loo up and down!!:yes:
Maui no longer rents the Spyder...few years back there was a vendor, but when I talked to him last year as I still want to ryde Hawaii...he stated there was no service available and those who rented totally abused the Spyder. He said Spyder not as forgiving as 2 wheelers that he rents...:gaah:

After last year's BRP event on Durango, I took a drive up Mt. Evans and had my photo taken to get one of the patches for driving up a 14er on a motorcycle.
Pike Peak was "closed" on that Sunday for the races. I was getting light headed in the parking lot of Mt. Evans which is not at the top of the mountain. You can hike that last part which looked to be a couple of hundred feet higher!

In in the middle of the rocks at the top of Pike's Peak parking area, is a Geocache. Got it, logged it!
