• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

We have all bought and sold vehicles. Usually it is local or someone you know. It can be a challenge when it is long distance. Here are a few points of interest that I have experienced lately. Some of these will differ from state to state.
  • Be sure to sign the front of the title upon receipt. (Both if co-owners)
  • When filling out the bill of sale on the back be sure that the name is exactly as it is on the front. If the front states Michael R. Stafford don't put Mike Stafford on the back.
  • Don't be stuck in the previous year. It is so easy to write January 6, 2014 when its 2015. Sounds stupid but I just did it and I consider myself to be at least semi educated! You just can't change the 4 to a 5. It takes a notarized statement from the seller even though the buyer in this case made the error.
  • This one may just be Louisiana - If the seller is from out of state he/she must either utilize a notarized bill of sale (in addition to the back of the title) or make copies of his/her/their drivers license(s). This is to prove present residency. Louisiana wants to be sure that the seller has not moved to Louisiana and not paid their due to the state.

Most of us have had "issues" with DMV or license bureaus but most of the time it can be fixed quickly by calling the seller and he can meet you at the notary. When the purchase is 7 hours away it is not as simple. Just thought I'd share because generally both buyer and seller are excited and nervous at the time of sell and the details of the title are easily overlooked. Hope I haven't bored everyone to death.

...I fell asleep, what happened? roflmao

Usually not so picky in Va. w a handwritten Bill of sale, and a signed title.

As Snoopy said w/ DMV in VA.. I walked in with just the title and was good. I did not have to show the bill of sale.

In WA, if the value claimed that you paid for the bike/auto is 20% below the state's assumed value, you will need to prove that the state's number is wrong (I used Kelly Blue Book) or you need a notarized "letter" from the seller as to why its cheaper, and or pictures of damage or whatever to justify the lower price.

Other than that, a signed title and a bill of sale is all that is needed, not notarized is ok. If bought thru a dealer they handle all of the paperwork, you are out of the loop.

In California buying an out of state vehicle is a MAJOR hassle. It is so bad, it is just not worth it. For a Spyder you have to remove the tubberware so it can be inspected, it must have over 7,500 miles on it, you must have notarized statements, ALL the vin numbers must match, so if you replaced the engine you can't register it. It is a HUGE problem.

You our have to take it to the DMV. Since they are now allowing illegals to get driver's licenses, the DMV is so busy you can't get through the line unless you get there at 6:00 am and plan to stay the whole day, or wait at least two months to get an appointment.

Here in the NorthWet, you need a signature on the title and a $80 check for a two year registration fee (no tax here).

Alabama purchase to Florida

I'm looking at buying an RT in Alabama and bringing it back to Florida. Anyone have experience with this or something close? Not sure if it's ok to ride back as long as I have valid insurance. Please help and thanks!

In Florida you have 30 days to register and get a tag.

It's like we live in a different country...:roflblack::roflblack: Whatever you saved buying out of state you will loose in taxes and fees and time...:banghead:

What ever you do, don't purchase a vehicle with the intent to ship out of state and then change your mind later. I was actually accused by the dealer I purchased from of trying to commit fraud when all I wanted to do was pay the states taxes so I could obtain a title.

Long and painful story.

Check with your DMV they have have extra forms that need to be filled out by the seller, which will save you a lot of headaches. Been there done that.

SC

South Carolina has a pretty good DMV with only one strange item. You must have a Bill of Sale form on their paper. You must get it from them, you can't download it and print it on your paper.
