We have all bought and sold vehicles. Usually it is local or someone you know. It can be a challenge when it is long distance. Here are a few points of interest that I have experienced lately. Some of these will differ from state to state.
Most of us have had "issues" with DMV or license bureaus but most of the time it can be fixed quickly by calling the seller and he can meet you at the notary. When the purchase is 7 hours away it is not as simple. Just thought I'd share because generally both buyer and seller are excited and nervous at the time of sell and the details of the title are easily overlooked. Hope I haven't bored everyone to death.
- Be sure to sign the front of the title upon receipt. (Both if co-owners)
- When filling out the bill of sale on the back be sure that the name is exactly as it is on the front. If the front states Michael R. Stafford don't put Mike Stafford on the back.
- Don't be stuck in the previous year. It is so easy to write January 6, 2014 when its 2015. Sounds stupid but I just did it and I consider myself to be at least semi educated! You just can't change the 4 to a 5. It takes a notarized statement from the seller even though the buyer in this case made the error.
- This one may just be Louisiana - If the seller is from out of state he/she must either utilize a notarized bill of sale (in addition to the back of the title) or make copies of his/her/their drivers license(s). This is to prove present residency. Louisiana wants to be sure that the seller has not moved to Louisiana and not paid their due to the state.
