Tire pressure in the Rear Kuhmo tire

A Brand New Tire is going to slip because it needs time to break in? Today was probably warmer and better results. I drive my 2012 RT with the Kuhmo at 28 pounds and its warm to the touch when I stop and put my hand on it. I wouldn't go lower than that BUT that's me?>???nojoke

Yeah, and I can completely understand that Sarge. It seems anti logic to go to a low psi at first, but then, try explaining counter steering to a non biker. They will just nod their head and walk away saying 'bloody idiot" :roflblack:...... but everything Mike and Peter A have posted on here makes perfect sense to me, they both have excellent and detailed histories in the tyre (tire for Mike;)) game to be seen as "experts", and everything they have told me will happen, has happened, so I am more than happy to follow their recommendations along with a little judicious google confirmation, of course.:ohyea:

Nanny kicked in for slippage? I haven't come across that yet, and I power slide as often as possible!?!

Mike....

I find this interesting ....... I have more than 75,000 miles on various CAR tires - Kumho, Michelin, Falken, Toyo and at 20 - 21 psi ( did some testing at LESS ) and never experienced - sidewall SCRUBBING ....... There are folks here who have ridden with me and I think they would agree I ride at 9/10 ths a lot ......... Mike

......Not sidewall, just the first 1/4" on the tread rounding towards the sidewall.... I didn't mean the tire was lying on its side..... 😄

Actually neither did I ..... With a Spyder I don't think that's even possible ..... But, you say that went away after adding 2 lbs of pressure!........... Generally speaking the Car tires we are using ( not Kenda or Arachnid's ) have a load capacity between 1450 and 1600 lbs ..... PER TIRE ..... even the RT with a full load of 400 lbs. has possibly 625 lbs load on the rear tire ..... I find it extremely hard to believe 2 lbs can do what you are saying occurred .... Mike

I Agree....

....with you, Mike. Even with a completely deflated tire (leaking valve after tire change) it only looked under-inflated. The only thing I am trying to say with words :banghead: is that when I saw the light scrubbing on the 1/4" above mentionned, I went up 2lbs and it is the same since then. (not that it went away). Did the 2 lbs changed something? :dontknow: ..... the point is 20-22 lbs is enough air, and more comfortable than the recommanded 28-30 lbs required in the Kenda. And that confirm the point that a car tire is better than a crappy "motorcycle restricted"tire..... :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

THE TIRE PSI THINGY

OK  Richard, now I'm totally in sync with what you were saying in your first post...... I love my Spyder and I want to help people enjoy their Spyders more....... #1. the PSI is a safety issue ( wet road riding ) & #2. - a ride quality / comfort issue. - - - Safety, because Car tires need lower pressure to work better ie. traction wet or dry. And Comfort because Tires are 30% of your SUSPENSION, the firmer that Tire is the less it flexes and that means the Springs and Shocks have to be more precisely tuned for the LOAD. This gets complicated and EXPENSIVE to fix..................ride safe, ride happy - glad you understand the PSI thingy (:roflblack:) .............. Mike :ohyea:

I just looked up the Max Pressure on the Kumho and its 51 Pounds which means Most people are probably using 40-45 pounds on it in a car situation?
21-25 Pounds Just seems a little low to me. Mine has been warm to the touch in 45-50 degree fall temps at 28 Pounds and Has Not slid out in any type of corners or acceleration? But do what you want - That what Freedom of choice is All about?

Thanks for that bit of info ...... the listed MAX Pressure for the Kumho ( 51 ) (or any tire for that matter) is given for the MAX LOAD you are putting on those tires ( which is also on the tire )!!!! at the time of use...... I happen to have Kumho's on my Toyt pk-up ( 3000 lbs empty ) and run 30 psi normally...... However when I am carrying my Spyder in my metal box ... my rear tires are at 46 psi & fronts at 36 psi............And I absolutely agree about the FREEDOM thing ....... When that traffic light is RED you can go right thru it if you so choose..... I only advise about the Tire / Traction thing because of my training. For many years I was one of the people who went to the accident scenes and figured out ...WHY ... it occurred. For me it was never a case of S.W.A.G. :yikes: :roflblack:....... Mike

That 51 psi, is most likely the "NEVER exceed this number!" level. nojoke
That might even be the max pressure used for seating the bead on the rim...

My KUHMO has about 6k on it now. I have been running 26 lbs. since new. It handles great & tire is wearing evenly. May try lowering to 22 lbs. to see if it holds road a little better. Next tire may be a General since i am hearing good things about it.
