thought I was dodging the DPS bullet

Wrong! Spyder was running great, but hit the 12,000 mark and approaching the 24 month mfg. warranty time; and I had not had either the recall or update to the recall done. So I bit the bullet and took it in for the 12K service and recall. 4 weeks later (but that's another story:cus:), they finally finished the bike and took it out for a spin. Need I say more than "DPS FAILURE" scrolling across the screen? :gaah:
BRP is supposed to be sending a new DPS unit to replace, so chalk up another week, at least.
With perfect riding weather here in southern AZ I would be absolutely livid had I not picked up a second ride a few weeks ago. (a 2000 R1150GS :D)

:( Sorry to hear of this.

I think it is clear there are MORE then the reported number of cases of DPS failures expressed on NHTSA http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17378 out there... If we just look at the number of members alone on this forum, I think it would be MORE then the numbers reported on NHTSA stats.

I wish you luck in getting up and running again very soon. Please keep us updated on the issue, RYDE SAFE and if you think it is a good idea, it would be helpful to contribute to the stats on NHTSA.

Cheers and good luck.

I had the same problem, only mine was always hard to steer. I took it in for the update last Oct. I believe and the update did nothing for the steering, it was the same. I stopped at a store not far from the dealership and when I started it, I started getting a scroll "Check DPS". I took it back and they hooked it up again and no codes came up so, they sent me on my way and told me to bring it in the next week.
Four days later the steering locked up:yikes: and I was able to jerk it free and get it home. The service manager sent a tech out with a trailer to pick it up. The tech took it down the street and coming back, shook his head and drove it up on the trailer. That afternoon, Leo the service manager called and told me it needed a new power steering unit and it was covered under the warranty. Nine days later I had it back and what a difference. I had to learn to drive it all over again. Since getting it back, I haven't had a problem with it and have more than 1600 miles on the new unit. (Knock on Wood).
At least you took it in before the warranty expired cause they told me, it would have cost over $800.00 to have it replaced. Talking with one of the salesman, he said he hasn't had a problem with his '08 SM5. But, that doesn't mean he won't and with all the problems BRP is having with this DPS issue, it should be covered even after the warranty expires. Who knows if the replacement is the answer to this problem? One can only wait and see.
Hmmmm 60 degrees and what the :cus: am I doing here?:dontknow: Time to go for a ride.:D

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Hope you get it fixed soon and are back on the road enjoying your spyder.

Just the unit alone was around $847 and the labor was like $140. Warranty covered mine though.

I never had any problems before I took it in for the "recall", so since it didn't present a safety issue to me personally, I'm not sure reporting to NHTSA would apply. Probably more of a product quality issue than safety (at least as far as my situation is concerned).
Hoping I was going to be one of the lucky ones who wouldn't have to deal with it. One of those cases where they fixed something that wasn't broke. Then again, I suppose it could have gone bad later, after the warranty had expired and/or actually presented steering lock-up while riding. Lucky me??? :dontknow:

Labor here is the same $140 and just the same, your looking at a $1000.00 bill, without a warranty. I still have one til March 2011 but, will have to look into an after market one before this runs out.

I saw a post by HDX about warranty's and will have to go find it and make some calls. I do believe while skimming through some of the posts, that there is a company in FL. I'd rather pay now and have an extended warranty, than have to pay for repairs out of pocket. I'm still getting notices for an extended warranty on a car I sold 4 years ago.

Glad I had the warranty. I bought the BEST warranty when I got the bike too, so that is a relief as well. I asked for a copy of everything done to the bike when I picked it up and the bill was over 5000.00, several sensors, 3 dps units, a new computer, and all the labor. That's a lot of money.:yikes:

This has probably been said before, but it seems like people should be sure and get the second update done while it's still under warranty. It's pretty clear that the DPS problem shows up right after that second update.

Great to hear you've gotten your money's worth out of your warranty so far.:2thumbs:

Normally with everything I buy, I get the extended warranty, whether its a car, truck, appliances or electronics. I really don't know where my head was that day. I do know, I just went to look and ended up buying and was most likely in shock, that I had done did it again.:roflblack: It was the same with the truck but, did get the extended warranty for that.:D

Mine showed up after the first update, when they put out the recall for the DPS. My 08 SM5 was used as a demo and had 260 miles on it, when I bought it in March 2009. From the first day, it was always hard to steer and after having the recall done it remained the same. Since I didn't know and thought it was normal. Only after making a stop at a store did I get a scroll "Check DPS" and took it back.

Since having the DPS replaced it been fine but for how long? Now I'm getting a check engine scroll, with the engine light on. The scroll and engine light is not on all the time and they have some parts on order and will call me when they come in.

Should someone need to have extended warranty coverage to defer the costs of a problem that arises in relation to a factory recall???????:yikes:

Someone shouldn't feel pressured into buying an extended warranty just because of this issue....

I've already seen one person post that he had to use the BEST extended warranty for just that reason. $50 out of their pocket to cover costs associated with a recall is preposterous, never mind a consumer having to foot the entire bill......

I asked BRP specifically how they would handle this as more machines surpassed the 2 year original warranty, and did NOT get a definitive answer from them. I think they need to be pressed for an answer now....

Someone mentioned lawsuit in another thread. I'm not commenting on that, but a situation like this could qualify......

:agree:Lou and until they come up with THEE Permanent fix to this DPS issue, All Spyder owners should be covered by BRP, even if their warranty has expired.

Well for those that still have a factory warranty - that is great but I really don't think the DPS swap-out should fall on the owner if they are out of warranty or have the BEST warranty. Don't you have to pay a deductible w/ the BEST - like $50 or something?

I agree. Any "known part failures" that are surfacing should be covered by BRP completely, not under the BEST warranty. I got the extended warranty for my RTS due to the issues I had with my RS. I'm still hoping for a complete cure for the DPS issues for all that have had them.

It would apply and NHTSA needs an accurate idea of how many of these units are failing if they are going to be of any help. You are not the first person on this forum to be reluctant to file a report. Often, the excuse has been. I'll wait and see if the dealer takes care of it. Even if the dealer "takes care of it" the unit still failed! That failure needs to be reported.
I'm sorry for the rant. It is not directed at you personally. This was just the time that I felt it was important to appeal to anyone who has a steering failure to report it to NHTSA. The mood is changing at NHTSA now because of the the Toyota problems. I appeal to anyone who has had a DPS unit fail to PLEASE report it. It only takes a few minutes online and could benefit you as well as the rest of the Spyder community. :helpsmilie:us all by reporting.

The best way to make BRP correctly fix any and all steering issues , in or out of warranty, is to make a report with the NHTSA as soon as any problems are encounted. Even the seemingly minor ones. Put the pressure on them folks. From reading the posts from those who have been personally contacted by Carlo and team, it seems to me like they try their darnest to avoid answering the important questions asked by owners. Every Spyder owner needs to know where he/she stands in reference to extending the warranty coverage for the steering problems and the cause and solution to these issues.

Finally picked up Spyder today with the new DPS. It is abundantly clear that my old DPS never worked at all. The difference in the new one is like night and day. Took it out for 20-30 mile run before loading it on the trailer and it handled silky smooth. Now just keep your fingers crossed that it stays that way!

Incidently, the bill that went to BRP for the recall "upgrades" and the resulting warranty replacement of the DPS was $1,247.00. My 12,000 mile service was $810.

I've had mine fail three times now- I reported it the first time- should I report it again?:dontknow: The last 2 times were after the dealer "repaired/replaced the DPS.:sour:
Still waiting to hear from the shop...was taken back in last Thursday...

You have had your DPS fail three separate times? While driving? I was sure hoping that changing the DPS was going to fix this problem. Was it right away that it failed again or did you ride it a while before it happened? Not good! Not good at all...
