Third Brake Light

I was a few bikes behind a guy (Mark if I remember) with a third brake light on his RT on a poker run yesterday and it didn't seem to be working. When we got to the end I asked him if it was supposed to be a brake light and he said yes and tested it an it worked. The thing is it wasn't very bright during the day time, I'm looking for one that is bright and fits the recess nicely. Can anyone recommend one?

On another note I see that Custom Dynamics has the front fender mud flap lights for the 12 RT but you need the Fender TIPS Kit so it functions as a turn signal... anyone tried this out?

The Custom Dynamics HMT brake light fits the recess perfectly at the top of the trunk lid, and is very bright. You can wire it on as a running light, then brighter when the brakes are applied. Or it can be wired just as a brake light, which I did.

You can also buy and module with it so the light flashes a few times before going steady. I didn't get that, but was behind someone who had it and I was impressed with how much more noticeable it was.

Good point, I didn't think about the module. My habit is to tap the brake a couple of times if a car approaches from the rear at a stop.

:agree: I've had two on my two RT's. Both were great, bright, and good quality. The only word of warning is installation. With the super sticky tape on the back of the light unit, you get one and only one shot at putting it in correctly in the recess. Be careful and think through how you want to "insert" it. That said, I wouldn't be without it. I use the running and brake light functions -- the high-mounted running light is a good thing in my opinion.

That's probably better than firing a warning shot to the radiator... I do keep and eye on any traffic approaching from rear.

Custom Dynamics, don't leave home without it. The module allows many different flash settings and is by far the very very best I have seen and used. Small module can easily go under sear and is about one inch square by 2 1/2 inches.

I have had these on both my Spyders and would not ride without them. The flashing module is the attention getter.

Agree. I manually flash the brake light a few times if someone is approaching. With the CD HMT unit back there, it's pretty hard to miss. I have a flashing unit on my other bikes but I wired it so some brake lights come on steady, as normal, and my "extra" lights flash. With the RT, it looked to me like the flasher unit would flash all the lights if installed according to the instructions. I felt that was a little "too much" flashing on the back end and didn't go that route. Just my personal opinion.

JT I use the custom dynamics light and it works great. Finless has a great way for mounting it.
He removed the sticky tape and used a sealing-adhesive silicone instead.
Hope this helps. And the back-off module is a great add on.

If you're talking about the light bar I recommend the one from Custom Dynamics. If you're talking about the third and fourth brake light I recommend the ones from Tricled they just seem to be brighter. My mudflap lights I got from Tricled. They are both great company and stand 100% behind there products you can't go wrong with either company. Well that's my two cents worth.

JT, yes you need to get the TIPS kit in order to make the front fender lights work as turn signals. You can also change out the amber side markers and run the strip in the fender and make these, along with the mud flap lights, operate as turn signals. While you are at it change out the side saddlebag lights to LEDs and if you want to go over the top there is a module that will make them also operate as turn signals.

I have the Magic Strobe on my Spyder along with the CD HMT run/brake light. I set mine to flash 4 times then go solid, that way if I want to repeat I just hit the brakes but if I'm at a light I'm not blinding the person behind me.

Whalen tir3. It's a public safety light. Small led, flashing and incredibly bright. I have had them on 6 different bikes over 12 years.

JT, I went with the Show Chrome fender and saddle bag lights. No extra cost for TIPS system to run them as running and turn signal.
They are wired ready to do both and are DOT certified.

And here is a install video:

As for the Custom Dynamics break light. I preferred not to use the double sticky tape on the thing.
1) It's impossible to remove should you ever need to.
2) the tape leaves a gap I did not like the looks of.

So I removed the tape and used silicon sealant to hold it on. Works perfect.

Hi Bob,

Thanks so much for the videos! Someone PM'd me to tell me about the third brake like video you made.

I like the side marker lights and I'll add them to the Spyder.

I have the CD trunk light on my last three RT's. Very bright. All three were installed by my dealer before I even drove them off the lot.

I had one of those on my Spyder until my husband sold it to someone else! Just received the replacement yesterday and it will go back on this week. We install quite a few of them for customers. It is super bright and can flash or run solid and they are an economical alternative to the Custom Dynamics light.
