Think I'm about done with Deals Gap

I was really in the mood for a nice cruise yesterday and had plans for a 500 mile day. I took a ride to the Pro Bass Shop in Sevierville to look for some other options for vents. Didn't find any but I did find a nice blower to use on the left side to pull cool air into the motor compartment. :doorag:

From there I drove though Pigeon Forge so I could remember why I hated going that way. They had a car show and the place was packed. Took me over an hour to go a few miles. :sour:

Got to the 321 and rode the Foothills Parkway to Fontana Lake/Dam and that's where the day went bad. I stopped and got some fuel before heading up to Deals Gap. I knew that there would be cops everywhere so I already decided to just take it easy and have a good time at the speed limit or real close to it.

I got behind a car that looked like it was full of a bunch of crackheads and I waited for a single yellow line before I passed them. As I got around them I came into a slight turn and I hadn't slowed down to the speed limit yet and sure enough I rolled right into a speed trap.

They got me for 60 in a 45 and the guy wasn't cutting me any slack. This was a wide open road that followed the lake and there was no risk of me being a danger to myself or anyone else. This was all about the money.:cus:

At that point the rest of the day pretty much sucked.:sour: As much as I like hanging out with the guys and gals at Deals Gap and riding those roads I can't see where it worth taking a chance when I know that the cops are there to bust motorcycles. I just drove 7000 miles without so much as a warning and I drive 120 miles and get a freaking ticket in my own backyard. Yea I'm a little ticked about that one. I think I'm done with that place.

Its not about the money, its about doing 60 in a 45. The cop was doing his job. I am willing to bet if you were driving a car 60 in a 45 he would have busted you just the same.

Yea it stinks, but....

I ride with all the local LEO's here in my little town and everyone of them speed. I let them lead the rides so I know just how fast is cool with them.

If you're going to sit here and tell me that you don't speed from time to time and that sometimes the speed limit is a lot lower than it could be then I guess you must be some sort of Saint.

I'll stick with "It's about the money" until proven wrong.

Well that's gotta suck!

I also speed when I want to get away from a car that I do not like - drunks, crackheads, reckless kids, people on cell phones not paying attention.

There are towns where we live that we won't ride in because of "noise" ordinances, and there are towns where the cops hide behind bushes to get you.

I can see driving recklessly but you were trying to pass a potentially dangerous driver - the cop should have taken that into consideration.

There is some interesting commentary on law enforcement policy in this heavy Biker area.....go to........tailofthedragon.com web site.Quite informative!!:chat:

Without making anyone mad the speed limits are there for a reason. I to go to fast alot of the time so if you can't do the time don't do the crime.Having almost 20 years in the fire service I have seen countless accidents and 80% of the time they are speed related. Sure you could drive 60 in a 40 zone without much problem but it is when you have a problem that the speed of 60 bites you in the ass. Now if you are the only one that gets hurt when this happens your lucky but it usually involves another vehicle or pedestrian. Once the accident happens now another set of factors comes into play, all the emergency personal and vehicles that have to respond to your accident costing tons of money and time, not to mention they are trying to hurry to help you and run a high risk of being part of another accident. Just trying to expain that things are not always as clear as you think they are. Be safe.:2thumbs:

cops and the tickets

It is probably not the money but the power.

The cops in my area know the difference between speeding and overtaking and do cut you some slack BUT it all depends who the copper is.

Some turn nasty as soon as they put on the uniform, it is then a power trip similar to the thugs/gangsters in a ghetto except here the uniform gives them legality.:yikes:

Others turn into civic minded citizens that respect the uniform they are putting on as a privilege to serve.:firstplace:

Coppers on the whole are a great bunch but like everything in society there are some really nasty ones out there ride safe be safer.:dontknow:

Imagine there being a cop hiding at every bush you speed by. Then again being firemen they do cut you loads of slack. Speeding of course does kill but there is a limit to it in the way you speed the recklessness involved and the negligence dictate the outcome. Speeding on its own does not cause the accident.

I ride that road 3 to 4 times a month since 2002 and have never had a ticket there. I did get a FL plate ticket but that's it. The cop even said that I'm up there a lot so why not cut me some slack? It's their call if they want to or not right? I can do the time or in this case the fine but it still ticks me off that they have just about ruined one of the best riding areas in the nation.:chill:

I do speed, and I get pulled over for it from time to time. If I get a ticket, I deserve it. Thats the way it goes. I speed more on the bike than anything else to get away from the idiots on the road. I figure if I get pulled over I will explain how it was safer to do what I did and get in an open area. I might still get a ticket but I would rather pay a ticket than an ER bill.

Like I said, it stinks, but it happens...

I have wrestled with this situation a lot. I ride near the speed limit all the time, but when I decide to pass on a two-lane road, or near a truck on the highway, I want to get it over with, especially when I am riding a bike. These idiots with their cruise controls set 1 mph above the next guy, hanging in the passing lane for miles, are dangerous! So is being exposed on a 700 pund motorcycle next to a semi truck, or a car full of erratic driving idiots. Trouble with this theory of getting it over and done, then slowing back down, is exactly what you experienced. The law doesn't allow for this common sense approach. I know of no good answer to the problem. We remain either "stuck in traffic" or at the mercy of the police officer.

Deals Gap, Myrtle Beach, the list is getting longer for places that the "Biker Crowd" aren't wanted. Today's "Biker Crowd" is a lot different than when I was a kid growing up. People with more upper middle class responsibilities, ways of thinking, ect. It's the few bad apples that make it tough for the majority.
Boy, sounds like I'm running for office!

it was only 15 miles an hour over your an adult they couldnt have given you a warning ???? i know the cop was doing his job but come on people it's not like you were doing 70 in a 30 "ahem" like some tattooed spyder rider got caught doing .... i deserved a ticket and the cop still cut me some slack ..... a cop gave my mother a ticket in lawrence mass for going through a red light ....my mother know the intersection years ago her friend died at the same intersection ... my mother is 80 years old and on a fixed income he gave her a 120$ ticket ... so you cant tell me that there is a difference between a warning which still would have slowed lamont down or some D#$% head cop making his quota of tickets costing him money and maybe his insurance rate going up ... all that for 15 miles an hour over .... and yes i hang out with more cops than most cops hang out with ... i respect there job and wouldnt trade places with them for anything ...
i feel better now .... whooo
shouldnt have read this before coffee

Getting a speeding ticket does suck.

I now have an Escort Passport 9500i Radar Locater. Before that, I owned the 8500 Passport. And, I had both the original Escort, and the Passport when it was first introduced. They're great! But, anyone that has any experience at all with any of them will tell you, they won't always prevent you from getting pulled over. If you speed enough, you're going to get pulled over. Plain and simple.

I doubt, I will be installing the 9500i on my Spyder. I live out in the country. I don't care if you have a Passport, a Solo, or the Valentine; if you are running by yourself, you are always more susceptible to getting nailed - especially by an Instant-On radar gun.

I last got pulled over in 2003 while driving my MazdaSpeed. I was running 84 in a 50 zone, early morning out on a country 2 lane road. Yeah! I took it to court, however, and got off with just the ($153.00) court cost. Nothing on my record; no increase in my insurance.

I never push it too much. Radar detectors are more effective for highway driving. Without the Passport in my truck, I would feel naked. But, I don't push my luck either.

In the little town, I live in; the police take great pride in handing out tickets. If you speed, you will get a ticket. I have warned 3 friends over the past few years never to speed in Oakland. Guess what? They all did. They all got tickets. People don't need to wonder why Oakland is a debt free town. :)

Add Shady Valley to your list. We were there last weekend and there were 3 Tennesse state troopers waiting at the water tower at the 35 mph zone near the store. They were getting the business that day. I have the upmost respect for our state troopers but go get the speeders where they are acting crazy on the curvy, no passing areas, instead of on the flat straight aways where even slow pokes like me can't drive the speed limit.

Not me, I feel it's getting a little ridiculous...our worthless governor spent money she DIDN'T have and BOUGHT 100 photo radars(60 hard mounts and 40 mobile) to help FIX the budget...she "HOPES TO GENERATE 90 MILLION A YEAR IN REVENUE".

LaMonster,

Would be nice if they protected the border that well.
