The tale of the oil check and the boomerang left middle body panel

A few weeks ago, after reading a post about the need to check the oil more often than I had been, I removed the left middle body panel and checked the oil (which was only low a pint after 2,500 miles). When I reinstalled the body panel I had to wrestle with it a bit since the forward edge on my Seal deluxe floorboards extend right up to the bottom of the panel. I then went out for a 150 mile ride and then home. The next day I went to the store; when I got off the Spyder I noticed the left middle panel was missing. I was unhappy---I didn't know what it would cost to replace and had no idea where it dropped off. Nevertheless I decided to retrace my previous days ride to try to locate it. I pulled out of the shopping center (I had not been on that road since 24 hours earlier) and drove not more than 1/4 mile when there it was, sitting next to the curb. It has a bit of road rash but not noticeable except close up. What's the odds? Maybe if I'd given it a little more time it would have gone all the way home.

It takes a bit of technique to put the panel on properly, without pushing the grommets through. First thing is tyo be sure to engage the little hook at the top rear, behind the adjacent panel. If it is not engaged, the panel can fly off. The put in the rear bottom post and then the fronts. Wetting the posts first helps get them through the grommets. Wiggle each corner to be sure it is engaged. If any wiggle more than the others, or feel kinda loose, take the panel back off, check the grtommets and hook, and try again.

Glad you found your panel. There are some mods posted on here where owners fabricated tethers for their panels. That could save one, and would at very least offer peace of mind.

Get yourself some self sticking velcro and you won't have to worry about losing the panel again. Put some on the right side panel also.

Buy a tiny little spray bottle from Target. Fill it with Windex & store it in bike.
A little spray on each grommet before you replace panel.
Plugs will slide right into grommets. Thus less chance of pushing them through.

At one point BRP provided replacement grommets and these have metal inside the outter ring of rubber on the grommet so that it won't/can't be pushed through. If you still have the old softer ones, check with your dealer for the new type.

I glued my grommets into place. :thumbup:
And still use a,"gob on the nob" at re-installation time!
