Taking the Service Dog Along for the Ride

I have a service dog that I wanted to bring along with me on my Spyder. I created this kennel like device in order to bring him along. Will be adding a canvas skin to the framework soon and will post pictures of the final project once completed. Please post your thoughts/opinions.

can the dog sit, stand and turn around in this cage?? if not then think how bad it would be to be confined like that.

Sorry but i am claustrophobic and being in something like that would make me very sick.

Joe: Whisper (my beloved service dog and best friend) has enough room to stand turn around and completely stretch out. My number one concern was his comfort. The space measures 29" wide by 17 high and 17 deep he stands 11" high and is 18 inches long ( not including tail) so I hope he is comfy and if he is not ( I'm going to use a "Whisper cam" to keep an eye on him) in to the trash it goes. He currently lays in it in my office when I'm in there while we wait for the canvas cover to be made.

Nice set up. How did you attach it to the Spyder?

It's attached with Velcro to the rear hand grips and rests on the seat in front. When the canvas is complete there will be an attachment point in the back ( not sure how there doing that) I'll upload some pics when I get the kennel back from canvas shop

Please, please come up with something better than VELCRO to keep your dog and cage on the Spyder. I am sure you LOVE your dog, and under normal riding situations this set-up may work fine .......HOWEVER....You need to think in terms of accident avoidance maneuvers such as swerving and hard braking. For years parents believed they could just hold their child in their lap while they were belted in and in a crash or severe braking situation they could hold on to the child WRONG...they survived while the child went through the windshield......Please trust me on this your dog and that cage are very likely to overcome the VELCRO......Mike :thumbup:

Very cool. I wish my Belgian Malinois was a little smaller so I could take him with me as well. Your fortunate to be able to take your buddy with you when ever you want. I agree with blue Knight that you may want to think about how to secure his carrier with emergency situations in mind.

use tie dowen straps like the ones to strap dowen a motorcycle or spyder.the hand rale on the spyder is one good tie dowen aera.:thumbup:

TIE DOWNS

William, Nappers idea is a good one I think, because this will allow quick and easy removal once you get to where you are going and I gather this was why you went with the VELCRO in the first place. I don't think it has to go over the top......just thru the inside so it holds the bottom rails secure to the handles........Plastic plumbing pipe is incredibly strong for it's weight. I built a trailer for my Bull dog Max ( as seen in my Avatar, he weighs 55 lbs ) from 1 1/2 " pipe that only weighs about 75lbs........when I put the clam shell on top and use it as a travel trailer I have towed upwards of 175lbs with no problems........By the way all those " connecting " fittings must have cost you a fortune.:yikes:.......Nice looking rig tho...
