Hi all,
I have been stalking for a long time and I can finally buy my first Spyder!
do I take a chance on having heat issues with a 2013 ST or do I opt for the 2013 RS that from what I read here has little issues? I am going to test drive on Sat but what are my chances that I will get a problem ST?

Slim to none..!!

most of the problems on the few that had them were the early released ones. Have not heard anyone with problems since. You will hear from those that did repetetly because unfortunately little was done to help them. But in the end this will be your choice. Test ryde them both. They are set up differently and you will have to decide which will suit your ryding and needs. ST (Sport Touring) set up for touring with lots of extras bags windsheilds seating position floorboards etc. yet sporty. RS/RSS all sport no bells and whistles but oh so much fun. (We have the RS...can you tell) good luck you will enjoy whichever you pick...:2thumbs: :ohyea:

I love my ST Limited. I have 8300 miles in it. I would just make sure all updates have been done. If you are really concerned about heat, make the new side panels part of your deal.

We love our STS

Give it a good ride and best of luck. There are some good deals out there that will give you wiggle room even if you choose to go with the new panels. There is quite a difference in the two models in my opinion.

All advice above is good. Test ryde is very important because each model handles and feels a bit different. You need to figure out which you will like best.

You may also give the 2014's a look. No problems with heat issues, and rave revues mostly. A little more money though if you opt for the RT.

Decisions, decisions.

I like my 2013 RS. Although I have basically turned it into an ST (MadStad windshield, Russell Day Long seat).

Great advice....

Thanks for all the great advice...sat is the day I take some test rides and make more calls about pricing. Deep down I think I am an RS girl but the test drives will tell the story.....you will definitely see me more often on this forum. I Can't believe how knowledgeable it feel due to reading all your posts..keep it up cause there will always be new bees who need guidance:clap:T

I have the 2013 ST-L and it was one of the first models released. I do have the heat problems on the left side with a little on the right. I will be getting the 2014 panels to solve the heat problem. Although I don't like having to spend the money to fix a problem caused by BRP, I do love my bike and am happy that at least there is a solution to the problem. I've had some of the other issues which were all covered by warranty. I am seeing great deals on the 2013 right now. I'm betting that any of the 2013s being sold now won't have the same issues that the first ownders had/have. I say test drive and go with your instincts :-) I do love my Spyder and will upgrade someday, but just not yet. I am a happy Spyder ryder/owner!

We just purchased a 2013 ST-L Demo and got it for $17k with only has 1500 kms on it. :2thumbs: We got it so cheap that even if we do need to put the new panels on it we are still far ahead. We also got the 3 year extended warranty for $1000. So, Spidergirl is set for the next 5 years. She had an RS but she prefers the seating position of the ST.

I picked up the same thing. 2013 ST LTD demo, $15k out the door! :2thumbs:

If you are looking at a 2013 ST new, I would suggest you ask the dealer to install the 2014 panel upgrade kit as part of the sale. They can usually work with BRP to get it covered as a warranty item if they try so may not even cost them $$.

If your heart is leaning toward the RS; go fot it!
It'll ultimately come down to the riding postion and ergonomics... give them both a good run (In some HEAT!), and let us know what happens next! :D

I have experienced both the RS (I think it was a 2009) and the 2013 ST I currently own. The RS was a total hoot, like it was designed to ride aggressively. It felt very stable in the curves and accelerated powerfully. But I wanted a bike for longer trips and the RS had much rougher feeling suspension and the forward leaning riding angle would certainly get to my 45 year old back, so I bought the ST. At first I wasn't very impressed with its handling, seemed like it had a lot of body roll that was unnerving in the curves, so I ended up riding it pretty slow in comparrison. I bought a BajaRon sway bar and a set of Fox adjustable front shocks and that solved the problem nicely. It handles much better now and I think it has even less body roll than the stock RS I rode. The nanny and I are on a first name basis these days.
It cost a little extra but its now what it was originally designed to be, a bike that is fun for short trips and comfortable for long ones. The mid-point between the RS and RT. I have not had any overheating problems with mine but I live near Seattle so the highest temperature I've had it exposed to is 90F.

I would recommend picking the bike with the riding posture and style that you prefer. If you're going to be riding possibly 300 miles a day or more the relaxed stance of the ST will be very useful :2thumbs: Remember that the RS & ST share a LOT of the same parts (from the neck down)

Both very good advice. Others have been successful in getting BRP to warranty the panels but you can let the dealer worry about it
