Swapping trailer hitch on the road??

My wife thought it may be a good idea to install a trailer hitch on her 2012 RT so if my 2014 RT breaks down while on a trip, we can just unhitch the 622 trailer and hitch it up to her bike. My question is: would be easy enough to just yank the hitch from my 2014 and slip it onto her 2012 on the roadside?? Looks easy enough, but want to make sure I am not missing something. Second, can you buy just the full wiring kit? If so, is the kit so expensive it doesn't make sense to buy it alone?? Would want to have the wiring already in place on her bike.

Thanks!

Swapping out the hitch on the road would be pretty easy. I would imaging you could buy the wiring harness by itself, but I don't know.

But remember, in an emergency situation, not having the lights on the trailer wouldn't pose too much of a problem.

On the other hand, if she had the wiring harness installed, if she wanted to take a solo trip, in 30 minutes she'd be good to go!

If you're are not a dyed in the wool gotta be an factory Can Am part, you might want to look a this link:

I found the same hitch for $207.00 shipped for my RS. The wiring harness looks plug and play for the RT. Just a thought:clap::yes::ohyea:

It isn't difficult but that is in a garage out of the elements on a flat concrete floor with the proper tools. Do you plan to carry all of the tools with you, mats to kneel on, maybe a pop up shelter for protection from the sun? Is your wife going to help you or will she be directing traffic so that they don't run you over while you are doing this?

Yes, it is easy but not what you will want to be doing in an emergency situation. Like Copperman said the lights wouldn't be that big of a deal. I know I've traveled across the country without them on my trailer (not by design but because they blew out)

It wouldn't be the first time I've overhauled something on the side of the road or a Walmart parking lot. I would like to stick with the genuine BRP harness, but can't find a part number for it. Anyone? Anyone? :)

As I see it..!!

wiring is the only glitch in a smooth transition. Making up an adapter should not be a problem but I believe there are modules invovlved with some units. If not handy finding the right guy can be tough...not that you can pick the time or the place but carry what you need and believe you will never need them...

The wiring harness from Big Bike Parts is fully isolated but not converted so you are left with a 5 wire output. So you would have to wire in a converter as well. So $85 for the harness and $20 for the converter. That would be about half of what a BRP harness would cost. The BRP harness would be a lot easier to install. One pair of connectors in the main harness. Big Bike harness has to plug in between both the left and right tail harnesses and a power wire has to be run to the battery.

To buy the BRP harness as replacement parts. It comes in 3 pieces. From WasWingers thread about making his own harness I quote "The Y harness is BRP part # 710003200. It's a called a module for some dumb reason."
As for the other 2 parts I don't know. Your dealer should be able to figure it out.

BRP Hitch Part#219400432 for RT 2015 and prior includes wiring harness for RT.

Now what I did for new 2015 RT was have the dealer cut off the square trailer connector and I got him to wire on a flat foour plug .
I have a converter kit for my RT622 trailer that converts the trailer plug to a flat four so that I can tow the trailer with my car.

here is a picture of a friends 2014 spyder RT S with a flat four connector using a Reese trailer plug holder no drilling required just use zip ties.

I have a 2013 trailer with the square 4 connector that matches what is on my 2014 RT Ltd, so I don't want to change that. Just looking for the BRP pieces to put the same harness and square 4 connector on my 2012 RT Ltd. I know, I know....I can't make anything simple! :)
