Sudden noise, chirping, & vibration from RHSide engine - anyone else? Ideas?

I was riding and all of a sudden, I heard a noise, a chirping sound, and a little vibration coming from right side of the engine. I will post a video. First thought was the front pulley, but that is ok and was replaced under recall last season. I was thinking maybe clutch, but it still shifts good. Anyone else's bike do this.

The pulley is on the left side, so probably not the source. The clutch is on the right side. But even when it slips, it's usually quiet. Have you done anything recently? Changed oil or done some other service to the bike?

Why can't I upload a video. I get an invalid file. It's from my picture gallery.

Could be any number of reasons - incompatible file type; file extn; file size too large... :dontknow:

Send me a PM or start a new thread in the Forum Support & Testing sub-forum detailing exactly what you're doing & how you're trying to load it, as well as the file size, type, & extension and I'll see what I can work out. ;)

JP58 - as a very active member you know SpyderLovers doesn't charge by word count. So use more of them. Starting with answering BajaRon's questions.

Sorry been gone all day mowing. No recent service. Did oil change last fall before I put it away. Have a least 1500 miles on this oil change. Did my 28k service with new trans filter ect. 43,000 on it now. I'm going to try to post a link from Facebook. I am not very computer savvy.

"I was riding" About what speed and gear were you riding? Was it a hot or cool day?

"a noise, a chirping sound, and a little vibration" Is this three things, or two things? Was the noise loud? Did it match the chirping sound? Was the chirping sound loud? Is it still chirping? Does it happen when you start your Spyder for the first time in the day? Does it change with engine speed vice road speed (this is important)? Can you feel the vibration in the footrests? Or handgrips? Or with your shoe against the engine? The vibration is more concerning than the chirp.

Just to confirm, right and left are as you are sitting on your Spyder - correct?

Speed 55
5th gear. All gears feel normal shifting
75 degrees nice day
Made a rattling or clunking noise when it happened. Just sounds noisier then normal now.
Chirping on takeoff only or sitting still loading the engine a little with brake on.
You can hear it in the video link I just posted.
The right side engine cover sitting on the bike where the trans filter is.
The vibe is in the floorboards and very little in the handlebar.
It vibes more at speeds over 40
Couldn't tell if any different when I put shoe against engine.
Hope this helps.

Some possibilities:

Drive belt: maybe some rust on pulleys, maybe the rear wheel alignment shifted slightly, maybe something got caught in a tooth (eg, very small pebble). I recommend careful inspection with rear wheel lifted off the ground using a small bright LED flashlight. Look for shiny spots and for any signs of belt wear.

Alternator clutch: it may slip when engine is first started but usually goes away once your Spyder is moving. Clutches can be sensitive to oil brand and age-related chemistry changes.

Transmission clutch hub: there is a nut that secures the clutch plates in the clutch basket. Very rarely this nut backs out but it does happen. Try a couple of searches and see if their symptoms match yours.

FWIW, that link brings you to the FB group, but requires you to join the group to enter.

I know wrong side, but my first check would be the drive pulley splines / pulley replacement recall stuff.

Do you have a vibration dampener? Check the bearings in that, lift it slightly and give it a spin see if it's dry.

I looked at the pulley and belt. Had the recall done last season. There is no red dust on the pulley. I will look at it again; and check my Lamonster damper. I replace it every 20k or so. It's due for that.

Well the splines on the front pully look good. I'm going to put it back together and test ride. It may be a clutch problem but it shifts good.

Update. Got the clutch cover and clutch basket out. The bearing plastic cage broke on the transmission shaft causing all the growling and vibration. Clutch looks ok Need to pull motor and remove transmission and split tranny case to replace bearings. Anyone seen a video removing the motor on an F3? I saw one on a '16 RT, but was a crappy video. Smoaks has one with the engine out, and the tranny removed and split. I have had all the plastic panels off the bike before.

It's good you found the gremlin, but it sucks that it was that far inside the motor!! Good Luck!!

You are one fearless rider! You're biting off quite a bit with this task. My hat is off to you sir! It would be lovely if you could document your progress with pictures. Not to add difficulty to your labor. Just a request.

I will take pictures of the process. I was a certified auto tech for my career, so I'm not afraid to tear into things. I also have a friend helping me that has strong mechanical background. He rebuilds classic cars. He has been into a lot of different types of gearboxes. I'm thinking the motor comes out the left side of the bike.
