Sturgis Bike Rally, anyone?

Tried to find rooms for the Sturgis bike rally in August and have not had any luck. The very few I did locate were $450 and higher per night. I don't remember ever having this much trouble before. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Anyone know why it seems to be so much higher this year?

Lisa,
Because it's the 75th anniversary meeting.

I have a friend who goes to Sturgis every year - but he goes the week before bike week. He says its not so crowded, but many of the vendors are already their and still enough people to make it fun. Riding around the Black Hills is much more fun when there aren't four zillion other motorcycles on the road.

Why not ride to the Deadwood 3 wheeler rally July 15 - 19 instead? Plenty of rooms available at much cheaper prices and very close to Sturgis. D3wr.com

We are some of the crazy folks who enjoy the crowds of the week. Wouldn't want it that way all the time, but for a few days it is kind if fun. We're going to explore the possibility of the preceding week.

We went a few years ago, two weeks before. Not too many people and the vendors were setting up. Stayed up in Spearfish, started every morning with a ride through Spearfish Canyon. Great place.

Good luck on finding a room this late in the game. I'm a hotelier and a group of us Spyder ryders are going to Rapid City the week before the rally. I booked our rooms last fall when they were readily available and not so pricey. Did you try all of the hotels in Rapid City? There are some rooms available and not at $450.00 I believe.

Lisa: Just had my hotel staff check and the nearest rooms available around Rapid City/Sturgis were in Gillette, WY and one hotel in Chadron, NE.
The rally people were projecting up to a million people attending over the course of the event cuz it is the 75th anniversary???? that is crazy. Good luck.

Good luck finding a place that's close to reasonable. You mention you like crowds.....you may not realize what you're getting into here. My wife and I, and a few friends, went to the 70th anniversary at Sturgis. It was not fun!!! Way too many bikers. You had to get in line to get off the interstate. Riding was not enjoyable, too many bikers with too much booze on the roads. Sturgis is a place to go, at least once, but unless you like being in a crowd where you can't move, maybe you should go in a year that's not an anniversary year?

If you do go, enjoy, be safe and come home safe!

Wow! on the pricing. They do it because they can. $450 is three times what we paid in Rapid City last May, and we stayed in a nice place. I can see that the 75th anniversary is the driver for the prices.

I love the area, but only got caught up in the actual rally one time. Way to many people for me and my enjoyment level.

Last May, we had Sturgis to ourselves. Toured all the sites at leisure and still had a great time.

See you in Deadwood. Just on the other side of the state for us so we are planning on going to that also.
