Strong Gas smell in garage after riding - ST limited

Today after getting home from work, I parked the Spyder in the garage, shut the door. A few hours later I came back out and a very strong gas smell took my breathe away, I thought that the trike may have been leaking gas it was so bad.

I pulled the spyder out of the garage, didn't see any leak spots on the floor, felt around the body and nothing seemed to be leaking.

Has anyone experienced this before? It has my concerned that something is wrong...

Excessive heat

Just the usual excessive heat boiling the gas in the tank or your evap canister may be full.
Check the heat on your gas cap next time, see if it burns your fingers.

Nothing new, my 2013 RT LTD has had the same symptoms. BRP wants to ignore it, and hope that it just goes away. You can file a complaint, as many have, on the NHTSA website. http://www.nhtsa.gov/

We have the same problem with our RT-S/13 ... I park the Spyder outside till it cools off and then move it to the garage for safety sake.
This has been my main complaint with every service visit I have had with no resolution for the last year and 7000 k/m's:gaah:

I called the BRP support line and they set up a case file for me.
BRP is working with my dealer, next they want to weight the evaporator canister, the same unit that was replaced last year with a hole burned in it.

I never fill the fuel tank to the top but still get fumes so potent that if I smoked and lit one up sitting on the :f_spider:....boom and I'm going to fly over the moon.
Drove it home from work and straight to the dealers with 1/4 tank and let the service manager sit on the :spyder2: to feel the heat and experience the smell.

The service manager agreed the smell was having a nauseous effect and got off fast.
This occurred in 60 F temperatures.

There are many other postings talking about this problem here.

Again , folks need to file complaints with NHTSA. Posting them here lets us know that you have a problem, but it doesn't get you anywhere. We all know about the heat/fumes/hot gas cap/boiling gasoline in the tank issues. So far there are only 25 complaints to NHTSA. I had the same problem. I detailed my attempts to fix it in a thread "my attempt to fix the horrid fuel smell". Now I can ride it at 95 degrees and not have the smell. Airflow is key.

That's just downright crazy ! And to think, a static spark with the heavy fumes would be perfect conditions for your home to catch fire. Also to ride with a tank of gas BOILING is scary.

I guess this is like a dangerous intersection that needs a traffic light. Someone will get badly hurt or possibly die before it's addressed properly and corrected.

I'm amazed at the things I read about Spyders and I really would like to own one.

This is a bud problem, but there are MANY :spyder2:'s that don't have it,don't let this keep you from owning one, we have bought 3:spyder2:'s and have Never had this problem or really any problem that was not quickly fixed under warranty. BRP needs to take action to fix this as it spoils a great product .

Gasoline can boil as low as 100 degrees F. Don't get overly concerned by it. I have a gas station less than a mile from my home, and I simply top off my tank before going home after a ride of any length. Adding a gallon or two cools off the gas and minimizes venting enough so that the charcoal canister can absorb any fumes. If you don't have a close gas station, keep a gas can with a couple gallons in your garage, and use that to top off your tank when it is hot.

I had the same problem with my 2012 RTL from day one. I had the CAT removed at Spyderfest. I now get better gas miles and very little gas smell. I have no problem parking in the garage after a long ride.

My dealer told me the opposite...

I don't doubt whatsoever that this might alleviate the situation, as it makes sense to cut in some cooler gas to lessen the overall temperature. Strangely enough, the technician at my dealer--upon me having experienced the exact same thing--recommended not filling up the gas tank on hot days after an extended ride. I have been following that advice, but I must admit that I still smell it. Not as bad and not for as long, but still there. Not sure what the right answer is, but I may try this one.

Yeah and I have ridden with a few spyder owners that THOUGHT they did not have the fume problem. Their's were worse than mine, they just could not smell it or felt it was normal. They are all designed the same and given the same set of circumstances and environmental variables they will ALL emit the gas vapors. Don't kid yourself, those vapors have to go somewhere.....
