Straight exhaust

Happy Motoring

I think that you have the right ideas. We should all have the right to remove any and all mufflers and catalytic converters that we don't like. Who do the states and the federal government think that are requiring these ridiculous and unnecessary parts on any vehicle? I also think that you should have the right to install any combination of lights on your motorcycle also. I think that we all should come up with our own personal light combination. We could put red lights on the front and amber lights on the back just to make people wonder if we are coming or going.

Seriously dude, there are so many things wrong with the straight exhaust idea. I live in the heart of a city and between the "straight pipes" and the sirens, I'm thrilled to get on my RT and hit the open road so I can hear my XM radio play through my helmet and talk to my wife without screaming. JMHO.

we live in different worlds... i have had goldwings with radios and helmet headsets.. i turned them off...when riding, it was neither the time or place for it.. i love music.. when i get up in the morning, the xm music (blues) comes on even before my coffee........ i have loud bikes and very quite ones.. i just tend to favor the louder... now after saying all that, i will agree with you on one main point.. forcing others to listen to loud pipes, or even loud music is wrong... i do my best to keep it down, while exiting the city... as a matter of fact, i plan on doing an experimental you tube.. this "tube" will be addressing the different noise levels my bike produces... it will capture the loudest my bike can be, to the most quiet... when you are on the bike, the noise levels are different, so the video will help me to understand... i love experiments! .. maybe i'll post it... instead of the usual warning "turn your speakers up" .. i may warn viewers "this may be offensive to some..." ha ha ... life is good ....

I greatly appreciate the responses. I began to respond to the first reply this time yesterday when I was getting off work. The response was a mere opinion and didn't address my original post. The response was more or less implying a lack of respect. Needless to say, I erased my response for a more respectful one at a later time. Do need to mention that assumptions are the end all, as we all know what assuming does. With that being said, prior to my posting I had done a couple of circles around my cul-da-sac with the muffler off. I then went to my immediate neighbors and asked their thoughts. No one said it was too loud - guess they are not fuddy-duddies :roflblack:.

Most of my knowledge is on 12v systems, not mechanical. I posted knowing that back pressure is crucial but didn't know if the cat by itself would supply the appropriate back pressure needed to perform efficiently. Then the rich exhaust smell had me concerned, again not knowing how that all works. Further examination of resources on the internet leads me to believe that the cat would provide enough at the lower RPMs but in the higher ranges it would start to suffer power loss. Exactly as some have mentioned here.

In my line of work, unfortunately, I piss enough people off. The last thing I want to do is piss off people when im not working. With that being said, as long as I am doing everything I can to be considerate of others, if you get offended by my exhaust suck it up and deal with it.

I saw countless post regarding HMF, Two Brothers, Tailgunner, RLS, and many other brands of exhaust systems. Its 6 to 1 and half a dozen to
the other regarding who has the loudest sound, who sounds the best, and many other categories. My issue is I want a certain look, but don't want to pay the high dollar for the exhaust. So I thought I would look into being a little different - no exhaust. This journey isn't about being loud as much as it is about getting the sweet rumble.

Again I appreciate the responses and took opinions lightly into consideration.

So I think I have addressed everything I wanted to address regarding the responses. Below is my conclusion

I became torn (as I have been for a month) between HMF and Two Brothers. HMF had an attractive price but not in the color i wanted ( i want carbon fiber but the flat black would match my spyder as well). Two Brothers had the exact look I wanted but i hated the price. :banghead: After more research I determined that the Two Brothers was the most versatile regarding sound. I could change the tips and even remove the interior packing to make the sound louder if I so chose. I have watched countless exhaust videos, but never got a good understanding of the sound because of distortion. I finally decided on Two Bros after multiple coin flips. I went ahead and ordered it so I can't back out. I will be sure to post my review as soon as I get it installed.

Side note: I am married, and my wife is the only one that said it was too loud...nojoke I only told her it was so I didn't have to listen to her while on the bike... :joke:
You can be my neighbor. Rode a Harley 80 ci with a Python 2 into 1. I loved it. My wife loved it. I am 60 yrs. old.

a straight pipe off of the cat might not give you the necessary backpressure that you need to run good. a local mom and pop muffler shop could make you up an elbow pretty cheap. then you can weld on any type of car glasspack muffler. most have a great sound and don't get really loud until you get on it.
Can you provide some more info on the black muffler exhaust? It looks great. I want to make my 2014 RTL a little louder. Thank you.

this one?

it's a car elbow, welded to a thrush glasspack car muffler. the tip is a stainless martini shaker.

I have searched high and low on this site and others looking for some answers regarding a straight pipe from the cat back on my 2013 RS-S SE5 but can't seem to find the answer. So I figured I would post it on here and see what kind of response I get.

I am in dire need to change the sound of my exhaust. I love the the loud rumble of a straight pipe (as is the case with my truck), but not sure how well it would work on my Spyder.

So that leads me to this thread... I recently removed the stock exhaust and started up the Spyder to see what it sounds like. It sounded amazing and loud! Has anyone does this and what are the potential pros and cons of doing this? Any issues with the performance? Any mechanical issues? I have looked at the two brothers single slip on exhaust, but not sure if I want to go that route or straight from the cat. With that being said, if it turns out that I end up doing a straight pipe, I will put a 45 degree elbow on it and a exhaust tip of some type.

It should be noted that with the muffler removed there is a heavy smell of exhaust fumes, more so that when the muffler was on. I know some of yall are saying "DUH!" but not sure how to word it any other way.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

James

James, it is a two step operation. First install a cat-bypass and take your muffler to a muffler shop and have them make a straight pipe. That's IMHO.
