There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Straight exhaust

I have searched high and low on this site and others looking for some answers regarding a straight pipe from the cat back on my 2013 RS-S SE5 but can't seem to find the answer. So I figured I would post it on here and see what kind of response I get.

I am in dire need to change the sound of my exhaust. I love the the loud rumble of a straight pipe (as is the case with my truck), but not sure how well it would work on my Spyder.

So that leads me to this thread... I recently removed the stock exhaust and started up the Spyder to see what it sounds like. It sounded amazing and loud! Has anyone does this and what are the potential pros and cons of doing this? Any issues with the performance? Any mechanical issues? I have looked at the two brothers single slip on exhaust, but not sure if I want to go that route or straight from the cat. With that being said, if it turns out that I end up doing a straight pipe, I will put a 45 degree elbow on it and a exhaust tip of some type.

It should be noted that with the muffler removed there is a heavy smell of exhaust fumes, more so that when the muffler was on. I know some of yall are saying "DUH!" but not sure how to word it any other way.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

James

Would hate to live near someone who has so little respect for his own hearing much less his neighbors that I'd get to hear his comings and goings whether I wanted to or not. I pulled my Cat in an effort to reduce heat. Worked on a friend's sportster he seldom drives he bought it with baffles removed to me it sounds horrible loud such a waste but he's a Vietnam vet with ptsd goes to CO for relief all I can say is glad he's not in my neighborhood.

If loud is what you are looking for go to the home page and scroll down towards the bottom and click on Spyder1attitude.
I have heard his setup and it is loud. Should be what you are looking for a deep loud rumble.

That being said. I do not like loud and be prepaird for tickets if you travel to areas that have laws for sound - like the dragon. I read a post where someone received a $400 ticket for his modified Spyder when riding the the dragon.

James, if you want to give it a shot then go for it. Don't let the old fuddy duddies on the site discourage you.
Post up how it all works out. Good luck

If you have a cat on it then I can't see any reason it won't work just fine. I agree it will be loud, but it's yours, build it like you want it. I see all kinds on crap on Spyders that I think is stupid, but it's not mine so I don't care. I think more people need to keep their mouths shut about other peoples builds. If you don't have a positive comment about the build/mod/farkle (I hate that word) then stay out of the conversation (unless they are actually your neighbor). Just my $.02......

i would try to contact lamont, the site owner and ask him this question, he is a brp certified mechanic and would most likely have the answer for you. i personally like a lil bit louder pipe on a bike, but would think a straight pipe might be too much.

spyders and glasspacks

a straight pipe off of the cat might not give you the necessary backpressure that you need to run good. a local mom and pop muffler shop could make you up an elbow pretty cheap. then you can weld on any type of car glasspack muffler. most have a great sound and don't get really loud until you get on it.

Straight pipe...FWIW, some back pressure does give better performance of torque and low to mid power. Not so much back pressure to kill high rpm power but enough to make the engine run as a package.

If I were going to build a true straight pipe with no baffles or minimal restrictions, the easy way seems to be remove the cat, and replace it with a bypass pipe. Connect to the bypass pipe, you could install something like the two brothers or similar muffler. Or you could use an oem muffler for the end fittings, and build a straight pipe onto the oem fittings.

Yes I live in Florida, and I have no plans to follow you. Good tones and acceptable volume is ok by me. I am not into plain old noise from a Harley or Sportbike. From personal experience, while driving home in the truck one day, window down and moving respectably above the legal speed limit, I was passed by an idiot on a sportbike with a race pipe. He proved he was BA by passing me nearly bouncing off the rev limiter while accellerating towards 100 in a 50 mph zone. Honestly, I thought I felt blood oozing inside my ear as he passed by and for a while thereafter.

Have fun whatever you build though be respectful to others.

With the cat left in place its not to bad. Its loud but runs OK. Pull the cat and it gets really loud. Lots of spitting and crackling.
I took mine around the block with the muffler and cat off before I installed my HMF. Personally, I wasn't into the sound but to each their own.
Like Coz said its pretty easy to work up a custom exhaust to see what works best.

If you want "Loud"; get married... :yikes:
:lecturef_smilie::shocked:
you'll have all of the "loud", that you can stand, and us "fuddy-duddies" won't have to listen to it out on the street! :roflblack:

My opinion
Some sound is nice to hear. AMA promotes and I think, helped design a sound test. It is used by some/many states for noise control. If it would pass that, I am all for it, if used in respect for others. Low gear wide open at 3 AM is not a good ida. If it will not pass this sound test, I feel it is too much. Many battle have been fought over the years on motorcycle bans. The reason given for the bans, in many cases, excessive noise.

Case in point. I was at a rally and walked down to drink a beer. Several Rally people there. A local asked how many bikes were n town. He had seen several. Some were okay, but some were okay, but others were really loud. A rally person asked how many he had seen ? He replied 20 or 30. Do not remember what happened after that, except to look at each other. There were several hundred Gold Wings in town, some in bunch of 30 or 40. What did the local remember ??

In America, you have the right to do what you want in lots of cases, but please remember how your actions look to others

Depends..!

With the cat on you will be fine and the system can adjust for it. Most that have tested have not extended the pipe any further. If you run down to the local muffler shop they can probably hook you up with some old pipe and a flange and you could get a better idea. You tube has many exhaust mods for spyders you can listen to but the sound will vary...remember this is a high rpm engine so your not going to get the thumper sound... you idle at 1400 rpm's that is half throttle on a harley...:roflblack:

Hi downdog2,
I'm not sure about 2013 exhaust mods since I have a 2012 RS that came with cat in muffler. I replaced stock muffler with a spyderattitude muffler & added JTs air filter (site sponsor) & built cold air intake. Performance seemed to improve with top end speed & fuel mileage increased. I didn't need a juice box or power commander rather I read various sources & manual to set computer by: 1) put on modification; 2) let engine idle for 5 minutes; 3) shut down; 4) take key away from can am 10/20+ feet & for 10+ minutes (I'm not sure about exact distance since I just took key to my den at least 70 feet away); 5) start up & ride & check out performance.
BTW - I've found you'll get all types of irrelevant & weird & blow back when posting either straight forward questions or responses to questions. When searching for information/answers/guidance on shop talk/mods; I've found using multiple sources/sites & using patience & using perspective of "in one ear & out the other". I've found the PDF shop repair manual as extremely helpful since it highlighted/clarified discrepancies of advice when I was searching for guidance. The manual is @ http://www.canammanuals.com/Can-Am Spyder.htm

Lots of negativity on the line.

I should have been more clear on my earlier posting. As a motorcyclist, I like to see thought out mods to any bike. For me, I'd always start with suspension and braking and get those mods right to get the most out of the machine I'm riding. When I see a near new posting about making the Spyder louder, I cringe. If it were about making it put out more power and the side afect was being loud, that is one thing. But, it was about making it just loud. This affects all of us as all who happen upon us will form an opinion about those riders... but it says a lot about the rider of that machine. We should encourage all us to make sound decisions as we ride.

It is a free country; as one who served and retired, I understand this well. We can all mod away until we cross a line that gets us fined. Ride safe.
