Stopping people from messing with your spyder

I had the spy alarm that I installed last year. Works great and the feedback on the remote is pretty cool too.
However, I took it off over the winter simply because I never used it....I just don't dig alarms...

I have looked at the Spy alarm. I just makes me nervous that they don't have an actual website anywhere for it. Seems more fly by night than I like. Most of the reviews have been good for them though and they are less costly than the Scorpio... I'm still up in the air between them I guess. And I need 2 of them... $400 total cost difference for me.

It's because it is a German company and they don't have a direct distributor here in USA.
If you look at the Ebay seller link I gave above, they have many different models for cars, etc. so it's not just the SPY 5000m.

I was leery too when I researched it and could not find much on it except on other motorcycle forums. So I bit the bullet and figured for $99 I would not get stung too bad. I can say the unit is built very well (not cheap shoddy China stuff), works very well, a nice harness with long wiring is provided, and it turned out great in my opinion! The only thing I can say is the instructions leave something to be desired! All they give you is a schematic! Took me a while to figure out. I actually hooked it all up to a battery on the bench and used test lights to test it and made sure I knew how to hook it up before trying it on the spyder.

I would be glad to help anyone installing it if they get confused.

This weekend if I am working on my Spyder I will make a little video showing how and where I hooked mine up.

Thanks Finless. Good to hear they are well built and German. I was guessing more China/Korea etc, but Germans usually overbuild things. I might reconsider them now especially since they cost a third of the Scorpio and I don't care if it has the RFID or not... basically just after the perimeter sensor.

Curiously enough; they aren't listed as being "compatible" with Spyder RTs...
I plugged in a couple of different years and models too. :dontknow:

Made up my mind and ordered one for each of our Spyders. Saves $400 by not getting the Scorpios we were looking at.:yes::yes:

Probably because you cant use the remote start or remote kill (but I think with some figuring out you can get kill to work). Same as the Scorpio. Does that say it is compatible?

I had a Gorilla 8007 installed on it, but sadly even at it's highest sensitivity setting it doesn't really work well. I can sit on it and rock back and forth and sometimes nothing happens, but if I open and close the rear truck or saddlebags it will usually go off. Disappointing, to say the least.

I would guess that's a install problem. First install in my 09GS was like that. I used the velcro that came with it for the instal because the bracket would not work in the location I picked. A week later I took it out and reinstalled again without the velcro. Worked much better and had to adjust the sensitivity down one. When I transferred it to the ST I glued it in with urethane glue so it's not coming out again except in pieces. I then had to set the sensitivity way down or gusts of wind or slamming of other vehicle doors would set it off.

FYI for the remote control antenna, I ran that up the passenger backrest and mounted it to the top area under the truck lid (where the 2 screws are to remove the passenger backrest). This gets it high in the air and away from metal stuff and thus the best reception for greater distance of the remote.

But remote start of both of these is worthless due to the can buss and the way the key work (with a chip).
But I am sure you could get the remote cut off working if you wanted to. I did not hook those up.

nevermind on this part... saw above where you tapped switched power and the lights....

Meanwhile.

Also, does anyone know if the kill switch is mechanical or part of the CAN? If it is standard, I might wire up the alarm to that for the anti-hijack/starter interrupt.

Thanks.

It's part of the CAN. The switch at is basic connections is a regular switch (like any other switch) but it is then connected to the harness from the right grip assembly and connected to the CAN. You would have to take the entire assembly apart to get at the bottom of the switch connections. BUT THEN.... If you were to do that and tap into them, what will might it do to the CAN communications? If it adds some impedance or resistance it may screw with how it works.

The other way to possibly get the kill to work is to tap into the ignition and cut power to it. This is what Scotty recommended if I absolutely wanted to try and use the kill function of the alarm. As I recall the alarm instruction tell you to do it there (ECM power cut) for other motorcycles.

Looks like I will leave the starter kill off for now. I'm not comfortable messing with the route Scotty suggested and don't want to mess with the CAN.

Thanks.

I did not install mine either. Just for something else to fail at 75 MPH.

Alrighty. I traced the running/switched power and the blinker wires. On the harness back by the battery, the colors are as follows (assuming I did it right, but I am 95% sure):

Switched/Run = Orange
Right Blinker = Brown with Yellow Stripe
Left Blinker = Gray/Red

I also figured out that if you don't have the mirrors hooked up you get the fast blink. That threw me for a bit as I had not hooked the alarm wires in yet.:opps:

Cool thanks! Saves me from having to remove panels AGAIN and document it for my video on installing the SPY5000m! THANK YOU!

Yes I found out about the mirrors too the first time :)

Cool alarm aye? Also there are a few tips about auto arming and disabling that. It's hard to figure out in the manual.
Did you figure that out?

Bob

Lol, yeah, the auto-arming is "different". I think I got it off now by hitting the unlock twice. Still testing. If there is some other trick, please let me know. The odd thing is that I know for sure the switched power is running up through the alarm harness but when I turn the key on the alarm still wants to auto-arm. Hopefully I have that shut off now so it won't re-arm and go off while ryding down the road.

I may get ambitious and re-interpret part of the manual as parts of it get lost in translation.

Just need to wire tie everything up now and I should be good to go, or rather my better half will be good to go as I am farkleing her :spyder2: first.

I have to sign off now but.....

Bottom line you can disable the auto arm via the remote. The documentation is crappy in this area! Took me a while to figure it out.
Disabling auto arm is, even when the key is off it wont auto arm. I do not use the alarm all the time so I turned auto arm off.

Also, when you do arm it with the remote it will auto arm again when you disarm it if the key is off unless you press the unarm button several times! I think it takes 6. This is true even is auto arm is disabled!!!! So understand that.

Also understand this. When you turn off the key you will notice the Spyder keeps the running lights on for a while. If you hooked to the correct wire for the tail lights (running lights) for the alarms 12V switched, once the spyder does turn off the lights, you should hear the alarm chirp 3 times OR auto arm if that is on. If auto arm is off, this 3 chirp is telling you "hey buddy, arm the system because I did not"!

Anyway I will answer and help tomorrow since I am home all day.
