Steering Issue Got Me!

Hello Everyone,

On my way to work this morning, I was riding in the HOV lane and experienced the same thing that Tom in NM experienced a week or so ago. The :spyder2: did a slight drift to the left for no reason. Did not think much of it. I started to make a slow adjustment to correct back to the right and felt the handlebar click :yikes:. Because of the information shared on this forum (:2thumbs:), I was prepared and did not panic.

My dealership is on the way to work, so I was able to get it to the dealer this morning. He has already talked to BRP. BRP informed him that they are aware of the issue and to proceed with replacing the DPS. He informed me that the DPS is on backorder :gaah: .

I also experienced a tighter "on-center" feel as I proceeded to the dealer. It felt like it did not want to move off center. I felt the click again when I tried to make a lane change to the right to exit off the freeway.

2009 SE5 with recall update done and ground wire fix installed.

Well... Back ordered in a good indicator that there is a run on the service parts due to the issue, or that they may have put a stop ship on the old part in favor of a new design/manufacture.

Hope my steering keeps on behaving until they have that supply issue sorted out.

Glad u are safe, good luck with your spyder. Mine seems to be fine now that I have the new dps. :2thumbs:

:agree:. It was a real eye opener when this happened to me. :gaah: . It took the dealer about a week to get the DPS shippend and replaced on mine.
I hope it goes quick for you. I got spyder withdrawl withing a day.

The weather has turned cold in D/FW metroplex (20-30 degrees), so I not too bummed. The Spyder had been sitting in the garage for over a week. I was needing my Spyder fix, so I decided to let her out of the garage today - and this is how she treats me back! :roflblack:

Glad to hear nothing bad happened when you experienced the problem, and that you were able to get it to the dealer quickly. Please let us know when your new DPS comes, as it will help others know about how long of a wait they can expect if they run into the same issue.

The Bad News -
It is going to take a while to get back. On Sunday I will have been waiting for the proper DPS unit 5 weeks. Twice they have shipped the wrong/bad unit. Apparently a specific part number for the DPS has been found to be bad and they are to be pulled from circulation. Your dealer should catch it. Whatever you do, do not ride your bike off if it is scrolling DPS warnings, as some have.
BRP customer service is no help and will not respond to my written inquiries. The warranty group would not call my dealer back for 4 days.
The dealership service manager finally talked to someone at BRP who told him the DPS units were on back order until January, but assured him that they had a small quantity of the correct part and that one would arrive by Monday at my dealer. I will be starting my 6th week then and I will beleive it when I see it.

I am not trying to bum you out or troll here like some may suggest. Others are reporting excessive waits and bad parts being shipped. Better to set your expectations now than be disappointed later.

The Good news - Most everyone that reports on a DPS replacement, that I have seen, seems to have good results.

I wish you the best of luck. Someone reported that their dealer pulled the part out of an in-stock spyder for them, rather than making them wait. I would start asking now on that angle unless you really do not care. My dealer called BRP for approval and BRP would not approve it. Guess BRP just assume I keep waiting. Thanks BRP. :helpsmilie:

It is good when you are prepared.

David, I am glad all the shared experiences worked to your advantage, too.

I posted most of the following as a follow-up on the thread I started.

So far . . . . I am impressed.
I posted about my steering issue, which occurred on Saturday, on Monday. On Tuesday Carlo from BRP contacted me - before I contacted them. I provided the necessary information and an incident File was set up for the Service Department to consult and interface with BRP on. Carlo was helpful and very understanding.

I set up a drop off time with the Service Department. ( a different one that I have been dealing with ) So far, they seem knowledgeable and were exceptionally nice to deal with. I dropped off the Spyder late yesterday (Wednesday) and they felt I would probably have it back to me, maybe, by Saturday.

Since the 3 minor steering incidents I mentioned in my posting, the Spyder has not exhibited any further problems in the last 300 miles. But, based on what ataDude and jsmiley experienced - and what Carlo recommended, I took the Spyder in a little earlier than I had planned.

As I said, I am impressed with everybody's "Pro-Active" concern and the serious attention they are giving this.

David, like you, the weather here has been colder than usual, though I would probably be out riding during the day if the sun is out. Spyder withdrawal has not set in, though it would be nice to hear how the repairs are going. I expect to hear something tomorrow - hopefully waiting for parts will not take long.

Glad you are OK and thanks to all who shared their experiences.

Tom
