• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Starting Issues / Surging While Idling Hot

I started having starting issues while attending SpyderFest earlier this year. Since then I have improved the situtation after changing out the plugs, wires, fuel filter, and other maintenance items. I also started adding StarTron to the fuel system.

All of these things appear to have greatly lessen my starting issues, however I am still having interminttent issues. Another issue I am having is with surging while idling hot, especially when it's hot outside. Yesterday after riding almost 100 miles in 90 degree temps (with two long breaks), while idling in the high temp the Spyder started to sputter, surge, and then just shut off. This happens more frequently than I would care for. I also had difficulty getting it restarted after this happened. I waited a few minutes and was able to start it again.

So it has been suggested to me that the purge valve could possibly be the culprit. I had the evap canister service done years ago. My Spyder is a 2008 GS with almost 54,000 miles. I also have a HMF exhaust.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Words of encouragement?

Purge valve? Vacuum leak? Dirty throttle body? Idle Air Control Valve? AAPTS sensor? MAP sensor? Exhaust needs repacking? O2 sensor? Weak coil? Bad ECM? New (hi-flo) air cleaner? There are lots of possibilities left. Some would take some careful testing, and some would need the help of BUDS. Did you read the plugs, and how did they look? I'm guessing from your description that there is no Juice Box.

Yeah, no Juice Box. Throttle body is clean and yes I have a clean high-flow resuable air filter. I also replaced the plugs just recently (last Saturday). The plugs were okay, no black buildup on them, but they did look like it was time to replace them. They had approximately 25,000 miles on them (they are Iridium plugs). I also have a new O2 sensor that I plan on putting in this week.

Focusing primarily on the surging / sputttering issue, what would you suggest looking at?

What do you mean by "the plugs were clean"? Normal light tan deposits, white deposits, or lots of bare metal showing? I suspect you are just running too lean, with the hi-flo filter and aftermarket exhaust. If the exhaust packing burns out a bit, you can pass over the ragged edge from lean to too lean. An aging O2 sensor (or other sensors) could be adding to your problems. A fuel mod like the JB may be your easiest way out.

Sorry, they had light tan and white deposits on them. I also suspect I am running too lean. I guess it's time to bite the bullet and get the Juice Box.
