Squeaking rear brake

I did some work on my Spyder( valve adj. check, belt tension etc.) After brakes warmed up they squeaked like crazy at the rear. Finally discovered that the combination of moving things around put tension on the e-brake cable. The cable was pulling the rear caliper crooked and when I gave the sheath some slack...my squeak went away. Might be something for others to look for. I hope my post makes sense?!:sour:

I'm going to take a look at this in the a.m. Just had work done, including the parking brake recall, now the rear brakes squeal real loud at 1-2 mph.

Coincidentally, when the original parking brake started to slip, I adjusted it and the squeal ceased completely. However, at the time I made the adjustment I also used brake cleaner and de-squeal and figured that's what fixed the noise... now you got me thinking, maybe it was the cable adjustment. I've since used the cleaner and de-squeal with no satisfaction.

Maybe you're onto something here.

I also feel there is a connection between the parking brake and the squeal. Mine was pretty good till I had the PB up grade, and the new brake pad up grade made it even worse! :spyder: :gaah:

Same thing with me.... When they fixed the parking break they also redid the breaks - I sound like a freakin school bus in heat!:gaah: It's sort of embarassing.
I'm gonna ask HDX to just disconnect mine - don't need it anyway - just throw it in gear like the old 2 wheel days.

Thanks for the post - something worth looking into!

It's just got to be excellent advertisment for BRP. As the unique LOOK of the Spyder draws attension to it and the SQUEAL really does.:spyder::spyder2:

I would think with that in mind that they would really come up with a FIX.

It's very embarrassing and makes it SOUND like a piece of JUNK! :spyder:

So, I played with the cable adjustment for a bit today... no joy.

I suspect, that an additional adjustment was made to the actuator, pulling it closer to the pad; hence the vibration at 1 m.p.h. and the squeal.

Before I blame BRP I'm going to follow the manual and try to get this aligned to spec.

Clarification?

Just so I am sure I made it clear...My problem seemed to be tension in the cable from the mount point on the bottom of the swingarm to the caliper bracket. I loosened the mounts on the bottom of the swingarm and gave some slack towards the caliper. The cable sheath "outer" not the actual inner cable was pulling on my caliper.

Maybe Lamont or Scotty can express this better? I hope I'm making sense.

I went for a ride today and as I got to the end of my driveway I was greeted by a horrible squeal from the rear brake, it was LOUD and obnoxious.
I bought my Spyder yesterday and it had 40 miles on it when it did this. I wasn't happy with that but figured it just needed to break in the brakes, I guess that's not the case.

Congrats on your new Spyder CSX4350. My brakes used to squeal fairly often. I would do the "hard brake from 50 MPH" fix once or twice a week to make the sound tolerable. Eventually I took the Spyder to the dealership where they put on the new style brake pads and (I believe this is the key fix) they put a brake squeal reducing paste on the rear of the new pads before installing. My brakes have been "squeal free" ever since. Same for dltang's Spyder.

Mine has the new brake pads and is worse than ever. I hate it,I hate it, I hate it. Have to get something done. What works for one apparently does not work for another. Yesterday we went on a ride and when other bikers were around you wouldn't believe the attention we got. I felt like crawling in a hole somewhere. :opps: Even the car drivers would look at you weird at stop lights. :gaah::mad:  :gaah::mad:  :gaah:

I believe that this is the only reliable solution. Many dealers seem to have forgotten that this was BRP's first solution. I'm not sure BRP will authorize it as a warranty repair anymore, since the advent of the new pads. I know our dealer refused to consider it, although he was perfectly willing to install new pads...which I refused. The brake noise thing is highly variable, and depends on how you use your brakes, how you break them in, the parking brake adjustment, going forward or reverse, rain and humidty, the cleanliness of the brake rotors, etc. You just have to keep trying various solutions until you find something that works under your conditions. I personally like cleaning the rotors with CRC Brakekleen regularly, then stopping hard periodically. For a longer lasting solution, removing the pads, cleaning everything, lubing the caliper mounts, and applying CRC Disk Brake Quiet to the backs of the pads, is a standard brake practice, and usually works very well.

squeal in brake area

What a piece of junk, It seems like everybody is having the same problem. Pulled up to a Harley Dealer ship and they just laughed. How do they expect to sell something of this magnitude and expect us to fix their problem. Who ever owned a motorcycle who had to clean brakes every time they rode.:hun: Like the manufactary should have done more homework before they sold to the public. Everyone has the same problem and nobody has a fix. Talked a couple of buddies into buying them and now I am sorry I did. Not impressed with my Spyder technology.

Harley uses the same vendor for their braking systems:f_spider::

:lecturef_smilie:Ya but BRP had the same brake squeal problem with thier 4-wheelers. You think they would of learned something over the years about a fix. The Spyder being a lot more exposed to the general motoring public than the 4-wheelers raises the anoyance and embaressement factor.:opps:

I've tried all of thips listed on here, including coasting down the mountain road and hammering the brakes to heat them up real good. They still squeal. Time to go back to my dealership for some changes.:dontknow::dontknow:

A friend who is a Spyder owner and an avid snowmobiler says that some of the Skidoos have the same squealing brake issues. :gaah: At least BRP is consistent. :D

My rear brake is still quiet after spraying WD40 between the backs of the pads and the caliper. (Try not to get any on the lining material!) It's been quiet for over a month and 1000 miles now.
