Desert Spyder

I was on my way to Riverside for a PGR mission when I spot these strange headlights behind me about 2 mi S of Outlet Center Dr near Barstow. I've seen those strange lights before. Spyder lights are strange but, nah, whats the chances of seeing one of those out here? Then it got closer and I could see the front wheels. Nah. Must be the rear. Then I could see the frunk. Whats this guy doing on my freeway? I motioned for him to take the next offramp (Hodge Rd). We pull over, pull our brain buckets off, and realize I know this guy. I met him at a High Desert Maverick (baseball) game a couple years ago when I was with my other bike club. He's a retired Marine gunny SGT. He doesn't use the internet much so he doesn't have any knowledge of any Spyder sites like here and the other forums or the SRA FB sites, much less big events like Spyderfest, Owners Event, Lamonts BBQ, Magog, or the biggest: Spyders in the Redwoods. His eyes got real big when he heard about that. I mean Spyderwood big. Gunny Sgts have either beady or big eyes I have discovered. Or both. Must be an occupational hazard. I gave him one of my business cards. Now that I carry them I use them. Before I never saw anybody. Go figure.
We drive on to Victorville. This was the first time he travelled with another Spyder. 15 minutes! He was coming home from Pahrump. Whats in Pahrump? He told me he was thinking about trading it in for a 2013. "Have you seen them?" he asks. "Yes, I'm still not sure about those front fenders." I said. "How many miles on your's?" I ask. "About 17,000." Its still a baby I thought. But change your battery. Its an age thing. Turns out he trailers the bike many places. He's going to Yellowstone after SITR.
You never know when you're going to meet another owner. And when you do, there's always something special about it. Special things happen, on a Spyder.
