Spyder vs. Deer???

I have seen where several of you out their have unfortunately had accidents with deers while riding your Spyders. I think all of us would be interested in what your outcome was, extent of injuries and damage to your Spyder. I would have started a poll but their probably hasn't been that many.

Hope I never have to find out. At the end of March, I was in a major accident in my f250 that was caused by a cow. The other person hit the cow then we hit head on. If I would have been in anything else, I would not be here today...

I would like to know also. We have deer out the wazoo here. A few years ago we had a couple pop over a hill on a harley a couple miles from our house and unfortunatly they did not make it. You cant worry about what can happen but it would be nice to here the Spyder fairs well against a deer or large dog. I ran over a rabbit on a bike but didn`t hardly even feel it.

Bike VS Deer

I put on here about my close encounter. ONCE is enough!!!! no damage to me or :spyder2: maybe cause I was only going about 45 ish when I hit her was only a fawn with out spots. had shield all the way up. Only injury was to my ego and confidence. :sour:

This could be an interesting thread since a Spyder will be still up on three wheels after the impact; whereas a bike is gonna be throwing sparks in most cases...
Keeping some semblance of control after the impact will be the deciding factor as to whether somebody is calling for a friend with a trailer, or a 3rd party is calling for an ambulance.

(Took out a woodchuck mid-corner wih my 'Wing... moved me over a foot in the lane and required a change of britches befroe proceeding... )

Someone posted picts in '09 of the aftermath. Lived to tell the story, but, I don't remember who it was.
:nopic:

A few people have posted here about hitting deer...complete with pictures. Seth was one of the unfortunate souls. he is still riding that same "Death Machine". :D

my death machine hit one last year, did about 2300 in damage, I "fixed" it myself, people from this forum gave me a bunch of parts over time and its mostly fixed. I hit it a about 40mph, it came out of the ditch right to left similar to bin laden and it went over the left side of my spyder, just hit me in the elbow.

Drove home and the wires on the running lights from fender were grinding on the tire and shorted out.The cops I worked with thru the deer off the road and said it was as if the space ship endeavor blew up on the highway. I fixed that and drove it the next day with no hood and duct tape on the side outlets.

I hit one in October. Spydie did great!

I was riding speed limit when a doe came full speed out of the ditch on the right. I didn't even have time to touch the brakes. I hit it very square in the middle with the hood latch taking the worst of it. The impact was such that the doe spun around and deposited snot on my left bag. I crossed the road and went into a ditch (about 10'but gentle slope) squeezed the clutch and was able to recover, come back up on the road and stopped on the right side, where I started cussing a blue strike. (It is the second deer I've hit.)
I called the sheriff to shoot it: I broke its back but it was still alive, and I needed at least the meat ticket so I could take it home. (It's delicious!). Damage to me =zero. Damage to Spydie= $146.00. My hubby Ron (machinegunner) fixed my latch for free, better than it was before, and the Tupperware (on the partwhere the foglight would go) was broken. My dealer was able to get me a used part for $22.00 and the other for $120.00, so with tax, about $146.00.
My previous encounter with a deer wasn't so lucky: I was on a Yamaha Stratoliner and in Sept. 07, (bow deerhunt had started), a doe came from the left so fast I had again no reaction time. I was going speed limit again.
Damage to my Yam: $3,600.00. Damage to me: concussion (3 plates in my face) broken ankle and a week in the hospital.
I think Spydie saved my life.:ohyea:

MY GOD!! I don't know if I could have gotten back on the bus after that, thanks for the response....

Never hit a deer but I did take out a brown bear once during the Summer Solstice Rally in Idaho on my 2000 Goldwing. :yikes: The bear's head hit the front of the engine and knocked it out cold for about 2-3 minutes. I didn't go down  but sustained about $400-500 damage to the tuperware. For the next few years (until the Rally was discontinued) they awarded the "Michael Spengler Wildlife Appreciation Award" to the ryder to took out the largest animal during the Rally. :firstplace: Fortunately, I never won the Award again!

Glad to hear you made it through the incident much better on the Spyder than you did the Yamaha.

That has to be scary no matter how you cut it. I have hit 2 deer, a small button buck with my Mustang, and an 8 point buck with my Ranger. The Mustang sustained $1500 worth of damage, as I hit the deer in the head with my right headlight and it bounced all the way down the side of the car. The Ranger was totalled, I caught the buck square in the grill and it came into the engine compartment deep enough to shear the pulley off the power steering pump. No way do I want to experience that on my Spyder, and keep hoping for the best everytime the sun starts setting while I am ryding.

Have not gone deer hunting with the spider

I have not gone deer hunting with the Spyder yet and hope not to.

But i bet the deer meat will be tender.

I live in deer country, My Brother in law and I were on a Goldwings GL1800's going through a desolate mountain area, that had a large flat area with large bushes on both sides of the two lane road.

We were doing about 50 mph, when I felt there was a problem (A premonition ?) and jammed on my brakes, then I saw 6 deers run out in front of me, I was more afraid that my brother in law was going to slam in to the back of my bike. Lucky he saw me and also stopped very quickly.

That premonition save me, us from a accident.

I should have bought a lottery ticket, well next time.

:yikes::cus: ! A deer is one thing but a BEAR. Geesh.

Has anyone mounted the deer whistles on their Spyder? My insurance agent gave them to me for the car and Spyder. I mounted two of them to the Spyder as I have a lot of deer around my home which backs up to several thousand acres of wood land. It's a regular thing to come home to deer wondering across the road and drive. Seems since I mounted them the deer spook and run away as I approach. Since the insurance company has enough confidence in them to provide them then it's their dime if they don't work or work in reverse. I had a real experience in KY driving a Jeep CJ7 dodging a large herd of deer crossing the freeway.

Maybe we could get BRP to offer an option for those who live/ride in deer territory.....

a clip on sno plow like they used to have on the old steam trains.:yikes:

Just an idea :roflblack::roflblack:

You have to worry about animal smarts...walk/run towards them and they run away...ride towards them and they run into you ??????????
Go figure. :dontknow:
cheers
Pete

Deer whistles??? :dontknow: What have your experiences with them been like? From what I've seen up here they just get the deer started in whatever direction they happen to be pointing at the time... :yikes: Your best bet when in deer country still is to simply slow down, watch the fringe and keep a loaded .38 for the one that was suicidal anyway... :gaah:
