There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Spyder update, STEERING FAILURE

Took the Spyder out today, nice and cool this morning at 58 degrees. She ran awesome all morning, 93 octane with no ethanol added. Later in the afternoon, when I finally got to 4 bars on the temp guage, the sputtering came back a little and some backfiring. Then, just at the NC/Tenn state line on highway 129, the power steering FAILED!!!!:yikes::yikes:

Man, this thing is pretty hard to turn in the twisties without the steering working right. Taking it to Smith Powersport in the morning, in the trailer, for them to check it out.
I got no error codes or anything. Once I got to the store and could stop, I shut it down, restarted it and the steering was working. Checked all of the relays, all were tight, no blown fuses, nothing out of the ordinary.

I will be calling BRP in the morning to report this, especially since I have had the recall completed already.
I really like the Spyder, but if this stuff continues, its up for sale.

Sorry to hear the trouble with your steering wheel. Do report to BRP!!!

Don't give up so fast, in selling your spyder. :f_spider: It will all work out again!!!

I had to have my DPS replaced after the download. My dealer said BRP told them 1 out of every 4 end up needing it replaced after the download.:dontknow:

BUDS said that my DPS unit was bad after the update.

The tech did a reset and zero'd the torque sensor and everything was fine. You might want to have them check that first. If it's off a little the DPS computer will shut down the power steering as a precaution and pop an error code though not necessarily a scrolling message.

Been running fine....steering wise since then. But she pops a little when it gets hot outside.

I was having one of the best rides so far this morning till the problem. I still relate the popping/backfiring issue to the temperature since it was doing great for the last two days till the temps went up. Now the steering, thats something new for me. Its not like its unrideable, just not as much fun. And my main concern was it coming back on when I was forcing it in the turns. No place for errors where i was riding today..LOL

There is a steering recall now in effect for 9900 Spyders both 2008 & 2009's.

That is a little hard to believe because I'm sure AGT has done quite a few and they have not had to replace any components after the update.

They couldn't make the "Check DPS" message go away after my download. They declared it fixed 3 times, I thought they had it last time. But the other day, at an intersection, the handlebars gave a twich and the message reappeared. BRP is sending out a new powersteering unit. Hope it works.

Did you check your fuses and relays???

Like I posted, mine did nothing out of the ordinary but when in a tight turn, I kept pushing the bar like normal and I noticed it was much harder than normal. Once out of the turn and slowed down some, I could tell the PS wasnt operating. I tried a short zig-zag and was sure of it. Its gonna be something real simple for them to fix. At least i hope so. I am on vacation up here till Friday and really dont want to spend the time waiting for the Spyder to come out of the shop.

I also had my DPS fail on me. It happened one week before I got the software update and the update verified that my DPS was bad. It was replaced under warranty and my Spyder has been running great since then (about four weeks now).

I had the same problem with my steering a couple of weeks ago. I swapped relays and everything has been fine. I checked the "bad" relay by changing positions with the headlight relay. Guess what.... no headlights. I just chalked it up to being a bad relay. I've put a couple of hundred miles since the swap out...... no more issues. I hope you get it figured out.

this report is not entirely accurate......there were some discussions reguarding some problems others had had with the steering prior to the upgrade and mention of a few problems after the upgrades.....it was not said this was the cause of the accident as at this stage no one knows what actually happened as both the riders on the syder were seriously injured.

a few lines were taken and reported but there was as always more to this.

please do not read anything into this report in the paper.

it is being investigated as the upgrade was only done 2 days before and prior to the upgrade there were no steering issues on this spyder. after the upgrade the rider did notice the traction control came on which is the first time she had experienced this.....a witness noted the bike just went straight........

more information has been posted here http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13655

thanks incy

Can someone tell me which relay controls the power steering system? After getting the Spyder out of the trailer this morning, I found the center and left one not seated real good in thier sockets. The roads I was on yesterday were pretty rough and I was pushing it hard ( for me) so maybe I shook the stuff loose. Thanks for any help...Dave
