There's been a clothing line out for many years with a spyder logo (both the word and actual spider). They came out long before our spyders.

The only thing trademarked is the red Y.

No they didn't, that's because the definition of Spyder is Roadster!

You can trademark a duplicate name as long as it's for a totally different product although this sometimes causes problems. The most famous case I know is Apple Records and Apple Computers. The Beatles already had Apple trademarked for music. When Steve Jobs wanted to call his fledgling computer company Apple there was no objections since music and computers were then two separate and distinct industries. Years later when Apple Computers started making MP3 players and then iTunes, Apple Records objected. For a long time Apple Records refused to allow Beatle songs on iTunes. However they've recently come to an agreement.

There is also a company selling Spyder fishing gear. I use one of their nylon bags as a trunk liner in my Spyder Roadster

Spyder is also a Paint Ball gun and Fiat has has a Spyder for a long time. The term "Spyder" is a term for a Roadster, so any manufacturer can use the term. Kind of like Coupe, could be used by anyone
