spyder rt vs.... THE WORLD lol

rag write up RT vs Goldwing and K1600 GTL
obviously down on displacement. does not seem like a bad review but it gets knocked for some things that after spending any time on the machine you understand "why" (for example a laughing comment about the 200mph spedo... when it doesnt go that fast). enjoy the comparison:

Yep, saw that. What I don't understand is how you can compare a Spyder (trike) to two-wheelers?

Another Bunch o' Apples to Grapefruit Horse Pucky

Okay ... I was listening and watching intently, when these two hacks mentioned the "110 mile range" of the Spyder. I would challenge that the little tyke didn't fill up his tank all the way ... and a 6.5 gallon tank is pretty big. I would imagine he has a whole 110 miles of experience on a brand new non-broken-in RT Limited. Speaking for myself, I'm getting 140-160 miles per tank .. on '10 RT-S. We have thread upon thread about this on this forum. Of course it doesn't have the mpg of a two wheeler. But if you go mpg-mpg with a Goldwing Trike or a Tri-glide they're on par in many ways. I concede that the GW Trike is the epitome of luxury over the Spyder RT in any trim; but then you're looking at an $18K price differential as well.

The last item of schlock I tire of is "pegging" Spyder Ryders in the demographic of the old, immobile or afraid. Many of us, including I, are none of that ... okay maybe old. Otherwise, just totally dig the machine ... and find that in the real world, to inlcude my Blue Knights alumni, and my mixed breed meet-up groups, it is very respected. In fact, I was recently a very effective road blocker/escort in a 80+ Blue Knights formation. I remember coming back from Maggie Valley over the top of I-26 ... totally at ease, totally alone on the road ... almost a spiritual experience, as good as any two-wheel jaunt that probably would have been blown all over the road with the winds at that altitude. Over this summer, I lead a ten-bike tour of mixed sports, cruisers, and dressers. One of the best rides they'd been on ... behind a Spyder. If I were wealthy enough, I'd probably have my Spyder, PLUS a Wing or a K1600GTL ... But ohh ... the K is under pretty heavy recall right now, and again it's apples to grapefuit. Motorcycle-USA has always had the most narrow-minded, immature evaluations of all the online rags. Rider Magazine and Cycle World do a more balanced job.

FYI,,,, The speedometer is actual in KM and not miles.. So do the conversion and you will see that the spyder will do almost 200 KM.. Least that is what I am told... LOL

:agree: You are right on with the speedometer issue. 100 KPH is equal to about 62 MPH so if you were to max it out at 120 MPH your speedometer would be at 200 if you were driving in KM's. I don't let on with the secret though, so when people look at the 200 (MPH) speedometer--they think I am driving a real rocket.

When I was driving in Canada last summer--I had the bike way over a hundred a couple of times. My little secret--:roflblack:

I recently made a 4k trip to Texas with my brother & his wife. I'm on my 2010 RT, my brother is on an '08 Goldwing Trike (CSC) & his wife rides a Harley Tri-Glide. I consistantly go far worse MPG than either of them. Where I'd take 5.5 gallons, my brother would take 4.0-4.5 gallons. His wife got better mileage than he did. The RT was pulling an RT-622 trailer and the Goldwing a Bushtec Roadstar trailer. At one point, we were traveling south on I-20, on an 80MPH speed limit stretch. We were running 85-90 MPH. I was getting 18.4 MPG push a 30 - 35 MPH headwind. My low fuel light was coming on at 89 miles. At other parts of the ride, I got as much as 32 MPG while pulling.

By the way, my brother only paid about $6k - $7k more for his new trike than I did for mine.

Gee ... sorry about your less than stellar experience, but again ... the comparison has to be apples to apples. Keep in mind: The motorcycle-usa.com review was a skinny little twirp on a Spyder RT 1-up, pulling no trailer and in optimal conditions. They are purveying inaccurate information to a readership that might be considering purchasing a Spyder. There are many variances to the Spyder experience; I'd assume as well on a GW or a TG. Pushing the RT's faring and windscreen into a 35-40mph headwind I can imagine would take your mpg down to 20mpg or so. The GW and TG are also going to be less effected by the trailer given the bigger engines. But you also note the 32mpg (great!) you otherwise achieved while towing the RT-622. That means more without the trailer ... and I've actually achieved 34-36 mpg on my broken-in RT-S.

So, the target of my previous response was the non-balanced comparisons, nacent observations, and the age/disabilities bigotry of the reviewer. I just think doing a so-called "review" with a 929 pound Spyder against a couple of high-end two wheelers, saying "Max on a (Spyder tankful) is 110 miles," and then to consign the Spyder to older, broken people who might be afraid of motorcycles is ... to be gentle ... STUPID. Reviews of Spyders have GOT to be trike to trike; not trike to bike ... Even the pic of the three bikes together doesn't make sense. Trike reviews are out there which pit the Spyder against the GW Trikes and Tri-Glide. It basically came down to taste. They described the Syder RT as the "BMW" of trikes, the GW as the "Cadillac of trikes" and the Tri-Glide as the hands-down winner for the "coolest and best looking" ride. The GW took honors for luxury. The Spyder won on technology, safety and long-distance comfort.

You are saying nothing different on pricing than I am, really. If you have a 2010 RT-S, then you probably paid in the $30-31K range for your Spyder out of the dealer, after a GPS and so on. A 2012 GW Audio-Comfort base is $27,100. However, add the trike option to it (Lehman or Motor Trike are the options), then you're going to take that 2012 GW from the base GW MSRP up to$37,000 to $45,000.00 (probably somewhere inbetween), which would make it $8K and up more expensive than your Spyder RT-S.

Enjoyed our dialogue ... it might actually be informative to others outside of Spyderlovers. Wish I could post it on motorcycle-usa.com.

Why do other motorcycles hate the spyder?

Before I owned my 2009 RS I owned a vulcan nomad 1600 I loved that bike. But now that I have the spyder I can never imagine going back to a 2 wheeler..I am perfectly able to handle a heavy 2 wheeler and im not going to lie and say it didnt have its perks. But I just wont go back to 2 wheels ever again.......But since I have owned this spyder the last 2 months I recieve negative feedback from other motorcyclist.........Also when ever you look on the web alls you see is people trashing our ride.....and the do sterotype the bike big time....I am only 27, perfectly healthy and not afraid of a big heavy 2 wheeler I just enjoy the spyder more...and i know other people my age who do also....so why do the 2 wheelers hate us???? could someone explain this to me!!

Yup

This is the written version by the same joker, affiliated with the same rag, who did the video. He is a bit more gentle in the written word, but his video lost my vote accross the board

Here's a review inside a trike forum from a triker: http://www.trikeridersnow.com/pages/TRIKE_REVIEW_2011_2012_Can_Am_Spyder_RT.aspx.

... and SpyderLover Cruisn Dave posted this a while back: http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?14595-Trike-comparisons
