• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Spyder Reverse tow on Trailer hitch - anyone tried?

There's a couple of earlier threads on this; some with posts in them where the poster ignored all the warnings against trying it and said they'd give it a go, promising to report back & tell everyone how wrong they were..... But I haven't seen any of them come back again to tell us their Spyder survived & the device was actually any good; just like I've not yet seen anything suggesting that really they AREN'T one of the worst ideas anyone's ever come up with for towing a Spyder yet?! :gaah:

I see three concerns, one of which might not be much of a problem.

1. Towing backward with windshield attached. Behind a motorhome, there might be enough of a wind break, but if you try that behind a pickup, van or car, that windshield will catch a LOT of air.

2. Nose clearance. The nose is already rather low, low enough to scrape when entering a driveway. How much clearance will be left when the rear is lifted several inches into the hitch cradle?

3. Steering lock. The front wheels will have to be locked somehow to prevent them turning side-to-side. The only mechanism on a Spyder holds it at full lock, not straight ahead.

There are probably more, but that's what I see on initial inspection.

Not for me or my Spyders. Anyone who can afford a big rig like shown, can surely afford a real trailer.

A $400 item can do much damage to both the Spyder or the tow vehicle. Not worth the risk, IMO.

Thanks for the insights. I am still leaning toward a full trailer behind my 31 foot rv but had to check it out. My only hold up is the length. The rig is already long enough and adding another 10 foot is going to be painful.

The price of fun escalates.

Many years ago I used something similar to tow a Honda 350 motorcycle. When I got to my destination, the bracket that went into the receiver was bent down. I would not use anything like that again. On the other hand, for something like the Spyder or Ryker, you could make a piece that goes on a hitch ball and is "L" shaped with two small wheels that the rear tire of the Spyder or Ryker fits in.

The other problem I see is the bolt that holds the platform to the 2x2 hitch. I assume the platform pivots there to allow the spyder to go around turns. How long is that bolt going to last? I am not going to trust a 1100 lbs spyder to one bolt. Im sure the hole will wear quickly also or possibly wear into the bolt compromising its strength. The strap should be included for that price also. Seems like some backyard inventor to me.
