Spyder Oil Blow By Sponge Trick???

Hi all, I just purchased my 09 spyder rs sm5 on Saturday. But I have been reading on this forum for the last week. And I have read about the blow by oil problems. I saw lamonsters thread on the catch can. But I have read that alot of people are doing a sponge trick. What is this? I couldn't find any how to or more info on the sponge versus the catch can. So if you guys could help me I appreciate it. I would like to resolve this problem b4 it starts. I asked the dealer I bought it from and they said they are aware of the problem and that when I bring it in forthe first service they will fix it. But by that time, I'll probly have oil eerywhere by then.

Also how do I even get to the airbox?? Where is it?? I'm not very mechanical friendly so that is why I would like to do the sponge versus catch can. I'm assuming it's easier!! Thanks guys!!

If the dealer is willing to deal with it, let them. You won't have "oil all over" by the time of the first service. Unless you remove the airbox cover, it is doubtful you will even know.

I agree with Scotty, that if you have a dealer that will take care of it then let them.

The blow by is not all that bad, and there are a couple of things you can do to minimize it to an extent. Worst I have seen so far is a little oil on the flat black piece behind the radiator. It is not like you are going to blow all the oil out of the engine or anything.

1) Check the oil level properly. It is best to go for a ryde and then check it once you are done so the engine has heated up and run at temp for a while. By the time you get the side panel off it will be cooled down enough for the test.

2) Do not fill the oil all the way to the full mark on the dipstick. Set it half way between the add and full marks, so it has room for expansion.

3) While the Spyder likes to run at higher RPMs it has been noted that higher RPM running will also force more oil into the air box. I still run at higher RPMs regardless, as my Spyder seems to perform much better there.

In order to get to the air box, you need to remove the upper side panels, then the console panel. The top of the shell is held down with clips, one of which is a little tricky to get to. You separate the halves by pushing up on the top piece, while carefully forcing it over the velocity stacks and pushing it out the right side of the Spyder (if you were sitting on it). Not too bad really, just a little time consuming with all of the tupperware removal.

I think it's too soon to worry about oil blowby with under 6 hunderd miles.
And i don't think it happens to all Spyders. So if your dealer said he's aware of the blowby and he'll take care of it, let him. Just ride and have fun.

Buy the blow by replacement hose from Ken (krb1945) and give it to the dealer to install. It works and for $12 you cannot beat it. Unless BRP has come up with their own I doubt the dealer would have something similar.

You could do it yourself. Taking the panels off, removing and cleaning up the airbox, replacing the hose with Ken's and putting everything back together shouldn't take more than an hour. Nothing difficult, just need to get a Torx wrench (I think a T-40?).

Torx wrenches... get a good....

set so you don't mess up the head of your bolts. Also while you are getting that good set of Torx heads also get a good set of Allen T- handle wrenches so you don't have a problem with the filter screws and crank case and oil tank plugs. I personally use craftsman, mac and snap-on. They all have good stout tips that don't usually fail. :thumbup:/Ken krb1945

Thanks for all the help and replies guys. The thing is, I'm 24 years old and I plan to ride this thing pretty hard. So I would like to prevent the problem b4 it even starts. Also Krb1945 hit it on the money, the dealer will charge me up. And they probly were just tellin me that to shut me up. I really don't plan on taking it to the dealer. I like doing things myself so that I know their done right. And I no u guys will help me out when I need it.

So Ken, I will b ordering your oil kit since I will changer own oil. So while I'm at it I will get this hose u got that RJB just mentioned for the blow by problem. Can u explain and show me any pictures of what it is and why it works??
