• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Spewing gas!

i absolutely have every intention of contacting the local dealer I have switched to, and I will be contacting BRP as well. I could have blown up an entire gas station. Being showered with hot gas is scary and am so grateful no one was burned!
my gear my all be ruined due to the intense gas smell.....even tho I washed it 2x.
i just want to ride and enjoy life, not have to worry about blowing up every time I need to get gas.
It definitely was a volatile situation

Put the smelly gear in a box. douse it with several boxes of baking soda. Close the box and shake. Let sit for a week. The gas smell will be mostly gone. You will need to wash them again but the soda will dissolve in the washer.

Ok.....the mobile mechanic came and I had him bypass that Evaporative canister, like the rest of y'all have done. Cheap enough......cost me 60 bucks plus the few parts. The canister is still on the bike, but he did bypass it for me.
I ran it for a short while, went to the store and back. It was up to temp, ran like the wind, and the gas cap came off without spewing hot gas out.
Mother Nature is being fickle today, and keeps threatening to storm pretty good.
Im anxious to get it nice and hot on a good long ride.
I'll keep y'all informed if anything changes.
Thanks again for all the awesome responses and information! This forum rocks!

So far: so good!
Here's to hoping, that this is the end of your troubles!

..........Your welcome, I was pretty sure if that was gone most of the issues would be also :thumbup::yes::yes::yes:.......................Mike :2excited:

If you bought this from a Spyder dealer, then in my opinion, it was criminal for him to sell it to you & say all recalls had been done, when the biggest & most serious of all Spyder recalls HAD NOT BEEN DONE.

If you purchased it privately I can understand how the new panels might not have been fitted.

You should most definitely contact steve: [email protected] & give him a full account of what happened.

You could easily have been a human torch, heaven forbid.

I think I am almost as upset & mad as you must be!!!

I wrote this before your most recent post was there.

Yes, if you bought it from a dealer I think you might wrangle a new helmet and jacket since they did not do a critical recall and sold it to you. That is reprehensible. And negligent. Make sure you tell BRP that you cannot get the gas smell off of your equipment. Insist that they replace it since this was their dealer's fault. You should not have to wear equipment that reeks of fuel.

i absolutely agree!
Ill post the outcome of my conversation with BRP.
I am thinking about shooting them an email so I have a hard copy of our conversations, just in case I need it in the future. ive seen numerous threads on the same year that has burned to the ground. Thank goodness no injuries as of yet, it's inevitable tho unless something is done about it. I don't want to die in a fire,or be in the burn unit for months just because I want to ride a can am that is known to have gas issues and catches fire. Life is too short!
i know nothing is perfect, and don't expect it to be.....the last one that caught fire had a 10 yr old as a passenger.

you can also put all the gear in a box with charcoal for a week and that will suck up all the fumes, good luck and hope the fix is in!!!!

Its an ST, there was no recall for the dealer to miss that relates to this issue.

You have eliminated the gas spewing problem, but you still must get the 2014 panels to solve the heat and boiling problem.
Good Luck,
Roger

I rode it this morning for a nice long ride up the canyon and back home.......probably 30 miles. The gas smell is still there, just maybe not as strong......and the gas cap came off with no problems. Lol.....I was scared to death to take that thing off!
I don't know if this will fix the problem, i sure hope so.
Concerning the new panels, I emailed BRP, had to change the ownership to myself because it was registered to the previous owner. I did all that, changed dealers, and petitioned for the new panels. BRP emailed me immediately and said they have created a case and no further action was needed on my part. They would contact the dealer and I would hear from them.
Im hoping to hear something fairly soon from them on that.

Please explain how the gas spewing problem was eliminated?

Since she bypassed the canister, that would vent to atmosphere, so no pressure would build up in the tank. That may not be to EPA's liking, but it should stop the spewing. Or I may be dumb and confused. I am pushing 77 real hard.

There was no mention that the canister was blocked and causing the pressure build up. Highly unlikely but possible. That would be just a guess because it was disconnected and no mention if it had been tested. The rollover valve is still in place and is a more likely culprit. If it is sticking shut from time to time. It is going spew gas out again.

I stand corrected. You are of course correct. The rollover valve may very well need to be replaced. I was just concerned that she not forget to get the new panels, to reduce the heat, which she has apparently had since day one.
I apologize for my ignorance.

Today I got a reply from BRP.....it was the standard " we have opened a case and sent it to your dealer"
The gas smell is just as strong as before.....I was hoping it would be better.
It can't be normal to smell gas fumes strong at highway speeds.....its nauseating and I'm sure unhealthy.
Im as frustrated as one person can be. I have this absolutely beautiful machine that I'm afraid of riding. I went from a ride I had never any trouble with, to a bike I'm afraid will go up in flames because of the gas smell. I paid a lot of money for this "dream bike" and really can't afford to eat the cost to trade it up for a newer one without issues.
I went to my dealer today and alerted them of what happened and of the case BRP opened for me. I also had the service manager come outside to take a smell of my ride. He said he could smell if from the front door.....I was parked in the spot closest to the door, probably 20ft from door. He said he was gonna put in the comments of that case how strong the smell was.
i have removed the gas cap numerous times since then with no trouble or spewing.

So what exactly are you wanting? They are starting a case and will work with you on solving the issue.

Did you smell gas when you test drove the vehicle? For me, that would have been a time to get the issue solved or find another :spyder2: that did not have the fumes.

We are supporting you, but you have to give the process a chance to work.

Lol....not complaining, glad they opened a case!
i didn't test drive the vehicle. I sold my other ride, went and bought this one. It was the color I wanted and 2013 was a newer year than what I came off.
the very minute I got I home I contacted the original dealer and was told from day one that was completely normal. I even had them come pick it up and haul it back to the shop to be checked out for that and brake fluid dripping on the swing arm.
they did a brake flush, refilled the brakes, and insisted the gas smell was normal.

what I really would like for 15,000. Is a vehicle I can ride without choking on gas fumes! Not too much to ask for I think.

Let's hope this works out all right for you. Two problems up front.

1. Lack of due diligence. $15K is a lot of money to spend without checking things out.

2. A dealer that fed and continues to feed you a line of BS.

One advantage here, BRP does not like to hear or see the word "fire." Be careful what you say in print because if they smell lawsuit--your done. I really have an idea they will work with your dealer and you to get the issue solved.

:bbq::bbq::bbq: No pun intended--let's just wait a bit.

its not my intention to sue anyone.
Yes, it is a LOT of money to spend on a bike, but I purchased it from a dealer, and assume,(my bad), that they would only sell certified units with no problems....again....huge, expensive-lesson learned! But really, who would I have had check the bike out?? They are the dealer!
I did research online about can am and problems......hardly anything pops up.
its not until you put the two words "gas smell" do things pop up as an issue.
i have switched to a local dealer as the original one is an hour away, and I really don't have much faith in them since they sold me a machine that smells like it does, and insist those are "normal smells after a ride".
